I talked to a guy who said he opens 360 drives and replaces the board where all the ribbons connect to and says the 360s work fine that way. It's my understanding that by doing this the drive would only read DVDs? Wouldn't you need to do a correct key spoofing?

well if you have the same model dvd drive you can change just the dvd drive pcb board .your drive key is on the flash chip that is on the pcb.
so the key would get moved in just through the board not the firmware

So by replacing the PCB inside the dvd drive your drive will then have a different key. I thought that the key on the drive had to match something on the 360 pcb. Guess I was wrong. The EEProm is on the PCB with the ribbon cables right?

no man
your dvd drive key is stored on the pcb.
so if you take your pcb from a dvd drive thats got a bad spin motor and put it in a dvd drive (same model only)that has a good spin motor.
you will be good to go.
because you have put you key in the new dvd drive.
the key is on a flash chip that is on the pcb.
