Backwards Compatibility

So is there any way to make the PS3 40GB backwards compatible? My mom is thinking about getting my dad one, mainly for the Blu-Ray, but we used to have a PS2 and my sisters probably would play their games on it. Can anything be done to it without modchipping it?

well i think i read that they had an update that would fix it, or at least fix the picture. not sure its worth worrying about playing PS2 games or not. I dont play playstation anymore, just my 360 if anything. i'd probably only buy the new PS3 games anyways so to me its not a big deal, but like i said, my sisters have some games that they used to play, idk if they do anymore though.
