You can take the updates, but it does make it difficult to install things with the 3.4 update...

The softmod seems good to me, I've been using it since the early days. The big difference between the two is that the softmod is not %100 compatible with all games (but there aren't ma ny on that list now), and the it reads discs at x3 instead of the default x6. You can now install a mod that doesn't require to load backups from a channel, whereas with the earlier versions, the easiest way was with a channel.

The first thing I would say is do lots of reading here and here. Get a idea of what you're attempting and how it works...

When you do come to doing a mod (whichever you may choose), follow a tutorial and make sure you do the steps in the right order. I've read of bricked Wii's from the Riskiimod being done wrong

The main concern with the updates is softmods and homebrew. R?ight now, everything still works. This is because the twighlight hack still works. Its more difficult to get it to work with the latest updates, but it can still be done, Backups with a chip are yet unaffected.
