Can I swap keys without flashing Drive to read backups?

Hey all...just read the bad news about the 3rd wave. Sucks!

Anyway, I was wondering if it might be possible to swap keys between 2 identical drives without the need of injecting ixtreme onto the new dvd drive. The point is that I need to fix and old drive by replacing with a new one. Console at this point is not modded. So I want to put the key from the old drive onto the new one but I don't really want the new drive to read backups.
Is there any way to accomplish this task by let's say....renaming the dumped key to cfw.bin?
Keep in mind that although swapping DVD PCB boards is an option, is not desireble due to extensive soldering (too much hassle)....thank you all !

Your missing one crucial piece of information. What kind of drive are you not working with. You can do what your talking about with all but one drive and thats the lite-on. You can't actually dump the firmware from the drive from the lite-on to leave it stock. Everything else, you dump the stock firmware so you then have a working copy of the retail firmware.

I'm dealing with a BenQ drive. The 2 cables in the spindle snapped off and it's a pain to re-solder'em. Beaesides the laser was acting up already.

So, what are the steps? Does it look something like this?
1. boot on 8.8
2. dump key old drive
3. let firmtool run
4. check dumped key is good
6. rename ofw.bin to cfw.bin
7. copy and paste the renamed cfw.bin onto USB drive
8. run fBen onto the new dvd drive

does that make any sense or am I just spinning my wheels?

If you have your BENOFW.BIN on your drive, or BENCFW.BIN whatever it may be, you can dump the FW, copy key in Firmware Toolbox, inject key into BENOFW.BIN save key, make iPrep USB Flash, rename the original FW to BENCFW.BIN and place it here BACKUPS > XXXXXXX > XXXXX X beings digits of your serial number. After that make sure you have the key saved somewhere, then run FBEN on it in iPrep.
