Did target just pull the old switcheroo on me?

A friend of mine just bought a new xbox today and he brought it over to my place to so I could flash it for him.
But when I opened it up the small warranty sticker on the DVD drive had already been broken.
I didn't think much of it until I hooked it up to my CK3 to dump it with jungleflasher, and I kept getting the message "serial data is bad" DVDkey files extraction aborted!. I tried this like 11 times before I just gave up.

Now I've read a few posts with people getting similar messages with liteon drives, but I found this to be particularly suspicious considering the warranty sticker on the drive was already broken. Seems to me like my friend was on the receiving end of the old gutswap.

Looks that way. Yeah the when people gutswap they tend to only bother with the warranty sticker under the faceplate but i would think that the gutswaps would be sent back to their suppliers or microsoft for testing?

yea
That is the down side to the "gut swap"

I myself have even got a bad one out of the box like that.
Now I look over the box well to make sure it has not been open before.

If the person that took it back said it worked they just wanted there money back
They may have just put it back on the shelve.

I always tell them it did not work.

Most of the super stores do send it back to M$ though.

I would take it back and tell them the truth(well most of it)
The box had been opened before and the console did not work right.
After talking to M$ they said "Take it back to the place of purchase for a new consle"

The funny thing is, that my friend had just done the gutswap. The xbox that he swapped it for was broken, so he has to try it again.

I'm not knocking the technique, but could this be a form of karma?
