Did target just pull the old switcheroo on me?

A friend of mine just bought a new xbox today and he brought it over to my place to so I could flash it for him.
But when I opened it up the small warranty sticker on the DVD drive had already been broken.
I didn't think much of it until I hooked it up to my CK3 to dump it with jungleflasher, and I kept getting the message "serial data is bad" DVDkey files extraction aborted!. I tried this like 11 times before I just gave up.
Now I've read a few posts with people getting similar messages with liteon drives, but I found this to be particularly suspicious considering the warranty sticker on the drive was already broken. Seems to me like my friend was on the receiving end of the old gutswap.
