Hitachi 79 mode B trouble

Hello everyone,

I am hoping someone can help me. I am attempting to upgrade my Hit79 from ix1.4 to 1.51 and trying to use Jungle flasher 1.55
I have the drive connected thru sata and USB hooked up with my CK3 kit. I first power on the drive with the kit and then launch Jungleflasher. When JF loads it doesnt show the drive. I do not have a serial port on my PC so I think I have to use JF to do this. When I first flashed the drive it was on a friends older PC and we used slax and iprep.
I last flashed a Liteon on my PC and had to make sure all via drivers were removed from my PC and portio loaded for it to see the liteon, could this be the issue? Do i need to install the via drivers for JF to see the Hit79 so that i can put into B mode?

Thanks everyone for helping!

that cant be man
iprep has never been ported to flas a hit dvd drive of any kind.

if you are trying with the new jungle v1.55
make sure to install the new portio driver that comes with it.

OK I tried removing the old port drivers and then manually reinstalled the new ones and launched JF with the the ck3 on and drive still not found. I did notice that on the ck3 there are two buttons, one to open and close the drive and another that says "mode". when i hit the mode button the light on the cks turns from blue to red but JF still does not see the drive. Any other thoughts?

I have problems dumping/flashing all hit drives in JF, but I can get them in mode b with it...

I would say go with Firmware Toolbox 4.8 (which must be what you used before). The only other thing you'll need is the 79Unlock cd, which can be found on Xbins...

Ok still having issues. I havent tried ftb4.8 yet but i am making progress with slax and JF. FOr slax to put it into mode b i had to try like 20 times powering on the drive at different times with slax was loading and i finally got a spinning up drive message which put it into modeb. i loaded windows and opened JF with the drive on and JF now sees it. After a few attempts i was able to dump the ix1.4FW from the drive but now when i try to "restore to stock" firmware i get error "Ram Upload - Execute Failed"

Any more ideas? This drive is killing me!!

thanks again you guys...

That's the very problem I have with JF... If the unlock works with JF I'd do that then try it out with FWT. If you have managed to get a dump I presume you have built 1.51 with your key in...

Load your orig up first (use the one with the correct key location from the 1.51 firmware pack) and do the restore, then load your 1.51 up and go for the flash :P

Actually I havent gotten a 1.51 with built in key yet... After the dump I click on the ixtreme flash button and it comes up with an error about thie drive not being modded or hacked and then another error with a message about not having a key. I still have my original fw file and i tried that one too but it did the same thing. One thing to point out is that when i go to my computer i cannot see the drive, other tuts i have seen people can see their drive under windows and they also have via drivers installed along with portio, i only have portio. could this be the issue? Is there also another program i can use to make a hacked firmware? I have the 30+ ixtreme hitachi 1.51 files and my original fw too. Does iprep work with 79 drives? i also tried to use the toolbox but im not very familer with it but it didnt look like it was seeing my drive. Sorry for all the questions im at wits end...

thanks

If you have your orig, what did you get it with in the first place?

I would not recommend you do a flash til your %100 you have a good dump with your key in it. If something goes wrong and you brick the drive, and you don't have a valid key, your xbox is no more than a DVD player :P

Once you have the drive in mode-b and unlocked, these are the steps for FWToolbox...

Note: I always check my drive has populated by 'scanning for new devices' in Device Manager before I open Toolbox, just to be sure the drive has been assigned a letter...

-Click Tools, then click 'Direct Drive Dump'
-Choose your drive in the dropdown box (you can use eject/close buttons to ensure you have the right drive selected)...
-Put an original game or large movie in the drive, push eject (on the xbox or CK3) once, then push the drive shut. This will keep the drive closed so it reads the disc, which you need it to do to dump/flash.
-For 78/79's, do a RAW dump...

If you still have the orig from when you flashed to 1.4, check this against the dump you've just done to ensure that the key is the same. You also need to get the Key location to select the correct stock firmware to restore with. You can check all firmwares on the first page of FWT, it also tells you the key location...

If all is well, and the key in the dump matches your orig.bin, then load your orig up to do the restore....

-click Tools, Direct Drive Flash, then click Differential Flash (RESTORE). Bear in mind that FWT will use whatever Firmware you have, so make sure it's your orig (or the stock firmware from the 1.51 pack with your key location).
-Click read and detect differences. This compares your orig to the 1.4 on the drive
-Once the Restore has finished, build your 1.51... Copy the key from your orig, by highlighting it, right clicking and copying, then load up 1.51 for your key location. The key should be all 77777777777's or 00000000000's, delete that and paste your key in. Click save key, and that's your firmware done...

-With your 1.51 loaded, click Tools, Differential Flash (PATCH)
-Click Read and detect differences
-If all is well, click Start Flashing

That's pretty much it, put the drive back in your 360 and try it out :P

Thanks! I am making progress. I am to the point where you say build your 1.51. I have copied my key and now im going to load up the ixtreme 79 1.51 FW, however, there are 8 different files (from the pack i downloaded... i.e ix151-79-4e10.bin and ix151-79-4d20.bin etc... how do i know which firmware to point FTB to and add my key to?

Thanks :)

Ok I'm getting further. I found out that in FirmwareTool 32 tab in JF and you will see the 4 characters besides "DVD Key @" thats the ix151 firmware you use. i created the fw and now im trying to read before flashing and getting error.. i have tried waiting 10-15-20-30 seconds with a original 360 game as well as a dvd. should i try starting the precess over?

OK I restarted the process and it looks like it took the flash. I will be testing it out soon. Also, the only way I was able to get FTB to see the drive was to install a via driver. I also had the portio installed to, but i just wanted to throw it out there for anyone else maybe having the issues I was having. Many tuts say to uninstall (and that was the case for my benq and lite-on) but for this hit79 i needed it installed. After the flash I restarted JF and did a dump to verify and it showed as having the ix1.51 and the correct key showed so I'm hoping when i put a disk in it everything goes fine. Man this drive had a mind of it's own. Drive was also opening and closing with just hitting the eject button 1 time instead of twice half the time. I will never work on a hitachi again :D

I will report back and let you guys know if it was successful.

Thanks for all the tips and especially the walk-thru!

They can be fussy buggers, in particular with VIA cards. Glad you got it though man :P

I thikn I'm going to write up a proper tut for Firmware Toolbox, it seems to me it's becomming a forgotten program and IMHO it works better than JF for the Hits...

SUCCESS!!! Tested fine and working like a charm. Thanks again everyone! BTW, lilrevuk, good idea with the walk-thru. FTB just seems a lot less busy and just works.

Thanks!
