Samsung MS28

Post by kratos87 »

Hey there,

I've read tonnes of posts on this topic and I just want some confirmation before I go ahead and buy the things I need. I've learnt its best to be over protective about things like this, so I apologise for my long list!

1) I have a Samsung MS28 drive, so should my setup work exactly the same as the procedure in this video:
http://www.robinhoodsplayground.com/for ... =110&t=401

2) Is Samsung.iXtreme.1.4 the firmware I should use?

3) This is the SATA PCI card I was going to buy: http://svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=1980 the reviews say it works with Xtreme Boot Maker, so I'm guessing it should be fine with iPrep too?

4) I don't play on live so I can be disconnected at all times, however if I did want to start playing on live, would flashing with my original firmware make my xbox "normal" again so I shouldn't get banned if I wanted to play on live? Or will Microsoft know I have used the Xtreme firmware whilst I was offline?

5) I don't have a connectivity kit, so I guess I'm having to use my 360 to power the drive, is it still the same procedure or do I have to do certain things differently?

6) And lastly, is there anyway to determine whether my pc will boot from my USB stick without having a SATA card yet? Because If it doesn't I could order some floppies with my SATA card.

I hope someone can confirm all the above!

I probably won't be able to start it untill January so I have plenty of time to read up on things! Everything I do ends up going wrong so I'm expecting plenty of errors and a bricked 360

Thanks for the great forum!

Everything you've listed looks good, but I'll give you some info on a couple of things here.
#1. Yes

#2. Yes

#3. That card should work.

#4. While your 360 is modded, if it detects that your playing a backup, I believe it can flag that instance. Then even if you flash back to original firmware, if it ever transmits the logs back to microsoft, you could be banned. There is always a possibility of being banned.

#5. You can use your 360 to provide power. Most modders don't like to do this though. If you can find an old AT power supply, the ones with an actual power switch and get a connectivity kit, or just get an xecuter V2 connectivity kit, this would be the preferred setup.

#6, when you first boot your computer, enter into the setup, some people call this the BIOS or the CMOS settings. Check for settings that would allow for booting from a USB device. If you find such settings, then you could use iprep the prepare a USB stick for a trial run and see what happens. No sata card is necessary to be able to do this.

Hope this helps!!

Thanks for your reply sadalius :D

I guess I'll take the chance with it, I hardly use my 360 anyway so its no big deal if they ban me. I managed to find a connectivity kit on ebay for cheap, so I'll try and buy that, I have a few PSU's hanging around so thats no problem. I'm pretty sure my BIOS says I can boot from USB but I'll double check, I just didnt think iPrep would prepare any media without a SATA card, I'll give it a go now.

Again thanks for your reply :)

When trying to prepare the flash stick I'm getting this error

Is that because theres no SATA card selected? How do I get around that?

do you have net framwork v2.0 in your computer.

iprep will open and install the firmware without a sata card.

You said you got this when trying to prepare the drive? Did you check off any of the boxes or anything? If so, try not checking any of the boxes, you might even try it with different USB stick if you have one.

Must have been the Patch MTKFlash I unticked it and it worked fine, the first time I tried it was greyed out though.

Thanks I'll reboot :P

It's all good, booted fine so I guess I just need to get the SATA and connectivity kit now. No doubt I'll be back to ask more questions lol

Yeah, you'll have to wait till you get your sata card before you can use the "patch mtk" option. It tries to patch the MTKflash.typ file with the I/O of your sata port, and since you don't have one yet, I guess it kinda freaked out a little.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/XBOX-360-DVD-Powe ... dZViewItem

Would that do the job for powering the drive? And would I be able to use a normal PSU with it if I short the pins like when testing them? Or would it be possible to use my computers PSU for it?

You would have to use either your computers power supply or a separate one even with the adapter. All the adapter does is take a molex connector from a power supply and converts it so it can connect to the 360 drive. That one would work, but you would need a way to turn off the drive, but leave to computer powered on since it's an ms-28. Thats one reason I suggested an old AT power supply or an xecuter V2 connectivity kit, the V2's has a power switch, where the V1, the xeno con kit, and the diygadget.com con kit doesn't have a power switch.

I could just turn it on and off by unplugging the molex connecter can i not? I'm only planning on using it once so I don't want to spend a lot on it, its the cheapest I can find in the UK, elsewhere they're £15-£20 ($40)

You woudn't be able to do it that way. At the very least, it would lock up your computer, at the worst, it could fry some components and mess up your computer or fry the drive or possibly both. You can use the 360 as the power supply, lots of people do it that way, just most pro modders don't like doing it that way.
