steady green then rrod on startup

Post by sas67 »

hi,i have a 360 with a benq drive.manufacture date is 2006-01-05,it has 3 heatsinks.when i got it i connected and booted it up,to see what problem was.on boot up the centre green light just stayed on and the outer lights didnt flash at all.i ejected disc tray and it went 3 red lights with green centre still on.so i took apart and did a proper xclamp fix(decent paste and proper bolts) and retested,i left the dvd drive off,and on boot up the centre light was flashing green continuosly,still no other green lights,then red lights appeared again..i have tried a different AV/HD cable to no avail...any ideas chaps/ladies?

i reassembled and tried again and still got steady green light and then rrod :cry:

how do i get the error code?all 3 red lights just flash at the same time,green lights dont do there normal startup dance at all..later today,ill do a little video of the startup and post it up

just googled error codes,and now know how to get them.i will look when wife gets up and post back,but will still post video

ok,error code is 0022
looks like its a GPU error/GPU overheating which considering its a newer revision(extra GPU heatsink) is most strange

just read a thread by sadalius concerning this fault.he mentions getting washers right.the method i use is 1 sprung washer between bolt and mobo(underneath)and 1plastic and 1 steel washer between mobo and heatsinks.then i tighten up well..this fix has worked on every other console..

The specific type of hardware failure can be determined by a "hidden" error code

* Turn the xbox 360 on, and wait till the 3 red lights are flashing.
* Press and hold the sync up button (the small white one), while holding that button press the eject button.
* The LEDs will now blink the first number in the code (as described below).
* Release the eject button and press it again.
* The LEDs will now blink the second number of the code.
* Release the eject button and press it again.
* The LEDs will now blink the third number of the code.
* Release the eject button and press it again.
* The LEDs will now blink the forth number of the code.
* Release the eject button and press it again.
* The LEDs will go back to the 3 red flashing lights.

You should be able to determine the difference between the 3 flashing lights and the error code lights by the rate in which they flash.

Here is how you interpret the LEDs to get the code number:

* All four lights flashing - 0
* One light flashing - 1
* Two Lights flashing - 2
* Three lights flashing - 3

0022 CPU error, generally caused by a poor connection to the mainboard (cold solder joints/bridged solder joints). This can also be triggered by an error with the TSOP.

there is a chance that the xclamp fix
may help this.

xclamp fix doesnt solve problem.why do some places say its gpu and others cpu?ive tried different washer heights and bolt torques but all to no avail.ill read up on heatgun method,and try that.if unsuccessful ill split 360 and sell as spare parts,got a benq drive that should sell well on ebay,hopefully.

Ok i had e74 and 1 red light. It ended up being almost the same boat as you I used at least 5 diff xclamp methods/sizes none worked then i realized heat gun. I went to home depot and heatgunned my 360 on LOW setting everything that was not getting heatgunned I covered in tin foil (like A/V output power resistors etc) I did about 1 min to heat board up all around the I did the 2 min circular motion on one side and then another 2 min circular motion on another side. Buy the cheapest heat gun you can find trust me the cheap one at home depot did the job for me. now its EBAY time!!! w00t

I would recommend insulating with a thick plastic (like bubble wrap) before you put your foil on. That ensures that you don't get any heat getting to components where it isn't required...

Start off at a low setting to warm the board up (up to around 250c), then I go at 550 for around 3 minutes. Always stay at least 2 inches away from the board, and make sure you don't keep the gun still, keep moving in a circular motion...

i stripped down mobo in readiness,and found to my dismay the the smaller of the 2 gpu chips had a hole in it..il take photo and post.looks to have a crack along its length,i think i did it when messing around with different spacers and screw torques..i got another mobo and dvd key..fitted it and spoofed a drive with new key and all works ok

That's one hell of a hole, looks like like you tightened the clamps up just a little too much.... :P
