Does anyone know if it's safe or not to flash Hitachi 78/79's with iExtreme 1.4??
I have read contrasting info on this and don't want to be the first to try it

It should be just as safe to flash a 78 or a 79 as any other drive. Thats as much as I know at this point.

Just remember that a 79 requires a 79 passkey, where the 78 doesn't.

About this 79 hit drive. I tried to flash one without the passkey. I made a few attempts and falied. Thankfully the drive still worked. I put it into mode-B with the Slax CD. Dont even ask me how because I had tried try like 10 times. Finally I got it into mode-B and windows detected it and everything. I though I was going to be the one to find a new way. Whe I opened the firmware toolbox and dit raw dump of the firmware it asked me where to save it to and then it said unable to read drive. Also on another attemps the 360 kept on tunrning off. I am not sure but I think with the propper program or programming experience someone can break the code and be able to make this drive flashable without the passkey. Get back to me with any info about this and let me know what you guys think about my discovery. Take care and goodnight.

I think the only thing with that is that the commands to flash the drive (internally) are not there.
I'm sure it will be done, once the passkey's have been sold

Thats pretty much the hold back is where the flash commands were removed from the flash chip of the 79. And it's just speculation about the 79 passkeys running out before a software solution is released, I dunno about that, could be true, but probably not. Even if it was, I can't blame Maxlmus for trying to make a few bucks.

It kinda sucks because my soldering skills are ok and every time someone brings me an Xbox with that drive I freak out. Specially taking off the black epoxy. I think I just need better tools, but I don't know where to get them from. I have one of those chips and I have flashed 2 of those drives with my stomach in a knot. lol.. If Maximus found a way to make a chip they can get the software, but hey its up to them. They want to make money and its there program.

The epoxy doesn't bother me. A heat gun and an xacto knife is all I need for that, but the soldering for me is a no go. I've never done a 79 and don't plan on it
