Hi guys, i managed to flash my drive and it plays back ups fine now, only issue i have is i only had 2 verbatim 8.5 discs which werent in really bad condition, just slightly marked, no deep scratches, burnt GOW 2 to both of them, one plays to a point then says "the disc is unreadable please etc etc" and the other just says this from the start, do you think its just the disks or is this a known issue for the 360? any help greatly appreciated thanks

Probably just down to the discs being a bit scratched up. Also worth burning at 2.4 speed (if you aren't already) Try and get some new ones and try again to see if it solves the problem.

yeah i burnt them both at 2.4, one is more scratched than the other, that one doesnt play at all, the least scratched on plays to a point so its quite likely its the disks, get some new ones tomorrow, its just that my friend said he had the same issue and had to have his reflashed but i think the guy was just tryin to get som cash out of him!

Nah should be ok as it plays one of the discs (even though it gives up so far through) you can check it with an original game to make sure it plays ok and good choice going for the verbs.

Out of interest do other 8.5gb discs not work at all? verbatim the only brand which will burn successfully?

No it's a bit of trial and error. Some use memorex, tdk, aritas etc but for the best results it's always worth sticking with the made in singapore verbs (the made in india ones are a bit hit and miss)

I've burnt games to many a disc, and I can personally say that you should never use Memorex disc. After burning a game to these disc, they were wavy almost deformed. Verbatim and TDK work beautifully. And you can get really good quality verbs really inexpensively
here.

I can agree with technoe on this one. Just the other day, I ripped a game and discovered I was out of verbatims. A buddy of mine said here, you can have one of mine. It was a memorex. Not having much choice, I burnt it onto the memorex. As soon as it finished, I knew it wouldn't work. I held the disk up and looked at it in the light. It had all kinds of waves and crap in it. And sure enough, It wouldn't even boot. My buddy blamed my burner. I picked up some verbatims next time I was out and burnt it when my buddy was around. I showed him the difference. He now pays the difference for the verbs.

ive been using veritas disks and all goes good for the burn every time.
however get half way through a game and some of them are crashing.
i would reccomend as soon as you burn your game stick it in your 360 and install it to your harddrive,if its installs 100% you know the game isint gona crash half way through.
ive had a lot of games which are playing fine then bang freezes up and crashes.tried installing them to my 360 harddrive and crashes at some point during install.
i check all my games now instantley in my 360 by installing them to the harddrive before i remove them from my pc harddrive.
i would still recommend veritas disks as this is only about 3 games out of the pile i have that have crashed during play.

also i agree about the memorex disks.
they are terrible.
i bought some dvdr memorexs to back up my movies on and they were crap.
my dvd player has played every disk i have put in it but memorex just wont play in it for some reason
and they were very expensive but lucky for me they were a gift and i didint pay for them lol.

I would recommend re-dumping the game, and cleaning the original game with a cloth.
Also, for me some games just will not burn. I tried to burn mass effect, and it took me 7 verbatim's to decide to not back it up... I have burned other games with no problem, but for some reason mass effect would not work, I redumped it like 5 times, and nothing...
Also, with the memorex disks, I dont know about them. A friend gave me 2 HP disks (Memorex) and I tried my very first backup (GTA IV) on the disk, it played fine, but would crash every now and then. The original disk is scratched pretty bad, its a wonder it works in the first place. I then burned RE 5, and it works 100% I beat it twice...
So for me thats a 100% success rate (I have concluded the GTA crashing was due to a bad dump... Since the disk is scratched pretty bad)

Your burner might be on the way out, can any of your mates burn you a copy off the original to rule out your writer?

also, GOW2 would load but it always crashed at the same point, as ive been through like 5 disks do you think it may be the game image? your type of dvd burner doesnt matter does it? i have tried it in both my pioneer and asus but same in both.
