GameFly and USPS are at odds, and could go to court

Video game rental service GameFly and the United States Postal Service (USPS) could be headed to court over accusations that USPS breaks thousands of game discs each year, and offers preferential treatment to Netflix and Blockbuster.

GameFly claims it sends 590,000 games to its subscribers each month and receives 510,000 of the games back. Around one or two percent of the total games sent each month are reportedly broken by USPS.

Ars Technica estimates that GameFly could be losing up to $295,000 per month in broken video games, if each game costs $50 to replace and one percent of all games each month are broken.

The video game rental service filed an official complaint with the Postal Regulatory Commission, accusing USPS of discriminating against the company.

To help reduce the number of games damaged, GameFly wants USPS to manually sort all of the games -- rather than use the automated sorting system -- which inadvertently damages CDs.

GameFly also believes USPS favors Netflix and Blockbuster over its service, as both companies send out a larger amount of discs.

"Until recently, none of the larger-volume DVD rental companies offered video games," said GameFly in the complaint. "On February 11, 2009, however, Blockbuster, which hitherto had offered only movie DVDs (which GameFly does not offer), announced that Blockbuster was expanding its DVD rental service to include video games in the second quarter of 2009. As a result of this initiative, GameFly now faces direct competition from a rival that is larger and longer established — and which, because of the preferential treatment given by the Postal Service, enjoys a substantial cost advantage in the distribution of its DVDs to consumers.”

The Postal Regulatory Commission has given USPS 30 days to file a response, and the PRC will decide whether to have a hearing or dismiss the case within 90 days.

Well i think is the biggest problem gamefly is having
Blockbuster was expanding its DVD rental service to include video games in the second quarter of 2009.

I for one will keep my eye on this.
I have not been happy with game fly for awhile now.In the beginning it was great now its went to crap.
My disc come from Tampa FL. (now) and it takes 1 day shipping for them to get here
and 1 day shipping back.
My problem with them is the fact that all the games on my send list is low or very low.some of the game are old others are new.
I for one dont believe they keep enough games for the demand for no other reason than to keep cost down.

This whole thing with the USPS i think is just a tactic to get the post office to lower the rate that they get charged.

I cant possibly see the post office deliberately wrecking their dvd's... If they know its the sorting machine, why not put foam in your package containing the game... If its just the disk in a paper envelope, thats their fault it gets broken.

Gamefly may be worried about blockbuster's game division but blockbuster will never be as big as gamefly. The same thing happened with Netflix when blockbuster announced their own rental service but Netflix is still the number one way to rent movies.

well
ive had them from 6-07
I have never got a game that even the paper was messed up on.
they do put it in a 2 sided protective shield made of cardboard
I dont see how this is happening

I fill if this crap was for real
they would be using the fact that there customers were getting a lot of broke game disc and upset about it.
You can bet it would not be breaking it just one way.

i think its just a way to try and get the usps lower the fee they have to pay per disc.

you can bet i will try out block buster and let you guys know how it goes. ;)

dont get me wrong
gamefly has been good to me.
i have rented many,many games
hmmm
if i had to put a number on it
i would say aroung 3.5TB

I've had gamefly for years, and have only had two broken disc. And the cracks were so small I didn't even notice until it wouldn't play.
