Sony will drop the PSP’s UMD drive and introduce a sliding screen when it unveils its new model handheld at E3 this year, according to 1UP.

Citing developers directly involved with the new system, the site says that the portable will be called PSP Go!, adopting the branding already attached to a number of European PSP products.

It will retain the same button configuration used on existing models including a d-pad, analogue nub and face buttons, and won’t feature twin analogue stick controls.

The site also says that PSP Go! will be available in two SKUs, with either eight or 16 GB of built-in flash memory.

It is expected to launch in Japan this September and later in the year in other territories, with over 100 classic and new PSP titles available for download at launch.

Sony said that it doesn't comment on "rumour and speculation" when contacted by Edge this morning.

My guess for the U.S. that the new PSP will be a STOP. No more used games to trade in or buy, and no more pandora. :o Just my thoughts, could be wrong.

well, with psp 3000, pandora is kind of on the back burner anyway. This will give the hackers something to work on with similarities to the Nintendo DS. Unless of course Sony makes the only way to get a game is to download it through them. But I don't see that as a feasible option, even with the popularity of wifi, not everyone has it or wants it (for security reasons).
