Do I need to burn it onto a DVD+R DL or can I burn it onto a CD+R ? And how will I know if it worked ?

you need to burn it to a DL and you'll know it work depending on what you're trying to do with it:

One shot boot mode! - allows a one off boot of gamedisc without -stealth/partition checks (will still use stealth), use activate.iso disk -to activate each time!

You don't need the activate.iso to dump games. Guys if you're at all curious about this stuff feel free to ask questions but after you've read the text file that comes with the firmware.

Right. To dump games, you would use the tray half closed method. Activate.iso is only used for one shot boot mode. It may help unlock a drive if there are problems flashing it or something, but as far as my testing goes, one shot boot mode would be all I would use activate for.
