Restoring Hitachi spoofed as Samsung question

I recently spoofed a hitachi 0078 (4d20) to Samsung MS28 because my samsung drive went out. Then, the video chip went out on that system so I decided to transfer the Hitachi over another system that originally had a Hitachi 78. When I went to flash it, though, I became apprehensive that I might brick the drive. The only ways I can think to flash it are to rename the stock 78 firmware as SamCFW.bin and use IPrep or to get the drive in mode b using I prep and then use either jungle flasher or FWTB to flash back to stock. Are either of these methods viable or is there a better way? BTW I'm using Vista64 with a VIA 6421 card and/or 4 native sata ports available on the motherboard.

Thanks.

You DO NOT want to use iprep to flash it. You have to use either FWTB or JF to do it. Make sure you restore it first though.

I can't get it into Mode B is my problem. I want to restore it before anything else but Slax won't recognize it because it's technically a Samsung drive and I don't have a connectivity kit to power it in Windows.

Try to get in in mode b in jungleflasher. The fact that its spoofed as a samsung shouldn't have anything to do with it. That only changes the ID string in the firmware. It doesn't change any of the rest of the firmware.

I'm using the system to power the drive and when I tell it to unlock the drive in Jungle Flasher 1.62 on the MTK32 tab, it says to power on with drive half opened. I can do this but not fast enough after hitting yes to proceed and it says Failed at Stage 1. Any suggestions?

No this is physically a Hitachi 0078FK that was spoofed into a system that originally had a Samsung MS28.

ok, then your thinking since it was spoofed as a samsung it should be treated as a samsung. It's still a hitachi though. Go to the GDR-3120 tab and check and make sure it's set to use the right port. Then use the mode-b button there to get the drive in mode-b. Make sure that you have the original firmwares in the hitachi ixtreme firmware pack in the firmware folder of jungleflasher. Once you get it in mode-b, make sure that it's set as a version 78/79 and click the radio button for restore and then restore it. It will keep the spoofed information. Once it's done, and if you want to put ixtreme 1.51 on it, make sure you have the hitachi ixtreme 1.51 firmware in the firmware folder and click flash ixtreme and flash it. Again, it will keep all the original spoofed information and should work fine once it's done considering there isn't anything else wrong with the drive.

Jungle Flasher isn't detecting the drive to put it into modeb. It just keeps showing dots on the screen (up to 8 lines). I've tried on all 4 ports that it lets me choose from the pull down menus. I read on a google search about disabling the drivers to get it to just use the sata port as input/output only. Is that something I need to do? The only way I've ever been able to get them into mode b was using the Slax 2.1 disks in the past

how are you trying to get it in mode b with JF? With mine I have to turn the drive on, eject the tray, then turn the drive off. Then open up jungleflasher, click the gdr-3120 tab, click the mode b button, then when the dots start across, turn the drive on. The drive should then close the tray by itself and JF should indicate Modeb done.

Still not working. I have it hooked up through the Via sata port that is farthest from the outside of the pc case, tried it on all 4 ports in the pull down menu and giving it time to get up to 8 lines of dots. How long is it supposed to take? Also, I'm on a 64 bit Vista machine. Does that mess portio32 up? In the past, I always had to get the drives into mode b before going into jungle flasher because I couldn't ever get jf to recognize them otherwise

Being on 64 bit may be your problem. If you can, try this on a computer with 32 bit OS.
