xbox 360 drive keeps reading games as DVDs

So i have been having a lot of problems with my xbox 360 lately.
I had my 360 flashed by someone in Canada in January, with the iextreme 1.5 firmware, and everything was working great. It was a Toshiba Samsung ms-25 drive and he did not give me the original firmware backup for my drive.
Last week we tried to flash the iextreme 1.6 on there with iprep v9 using cofree's tutorial on this site, it wouldnt let me make a backup (reading from the drive) so we just flashed it with custom firmware for that drive. That might have screwed it up coz I kept reading everywhere that I should have the backup for my drive, which I did not. After putting that in the console, it just kept thinking the game disc (original or burned) was a dvd and that white screen would come up.
It also started to give me the 3 red light ring of death, so we just started trying to figure out how to fix that. After reading up on tutorials to replacing the x-clamps, we finished doing all that and I even ordered a brand new benq drive for my console. The drive came in and after the red ring problem was solved, we just put the drive in the console to see if it would read my original discs correctly, but it was still reading them as DVDs.
Then we figured that if we were to flash this benq drive with the custom firmware, it will work. So this time around, we went ahead and backed up the original firmware and flashed it with cofree's iprep v9 tutorial and still the same problem came up, after it said that it had successfully flashed the drive. I also installed a friends successfully flashed (1.6 extreme) benq drive and game orignals still come up as "Play DVD". Is this something that can be fixed, or since I don't have that original drive's backup firmware I'm SOL? please help!
