I got a nec 3550 burner and I was thinking of getting a new one. I`ve been looking at Pioneer Dvr 710 or Pioneer 112D. What do you think of these two? Thanks

you dont need a different burner, the nec (i still have an old 3500 with hacked firm)) ones are great, what i suggest is to first try a xbox game (burn with imgburn, put in the right layerbreak) and see it it works, bitsetting is not even needed anymore but im sure there excist firmware for 3520 that have bitsetting.

The NEC burners have loads of hacked firmware available for all models...

Do a search on 'Liggy'

Out of curiosity, why would you hack the firmware of the DVD burner?

Make it RPC-1 (region free)
Set booktype/bitsetting (some drives have the capacity to do this, but the firmware 'restricts' them)
Make it more compatible with dvd's (create your own firmware - this is something I have had to do in the past, couldn't get certain DL's to work til I had). I think this called media speed code editing.

Don't get me wrong, with almost all of the new burners you don't have to do any of this. I've done all of this with my 6650A to get a working 360 game...

I have a NEC 3550A and I've used it for well over year, done tons of burns on it...works great...I fear someday soon it will probably give up the ghost. But I noticed you said you used a hacked firmware for your NEC...should I hack my firmware?--if so, which one should I use? I do a lot of single layer DVD burning with it and general CD-ROM stuff for my computer.

Thanks

I have two nec 3550A drives, one black and one white face. I flashed the white one with Mad Dog 1f3_rpcl just to try. I used Binflash GUI ( 32 Win ) and get the guide. You can change from mad dog to liggys 107 to nec 107 and back to what ever you like the best. I had nec 105 on both of mine so I put nec 107 on black one and put mad dog, liggys 107 , nec 107 and went back to mad dog tonight. I testing it this week. Liggys 107 has booktype to dvd rom & RPC1 is remove region checks & commands. I think mad dog does the same. If your burner is working ok I would not mess with it. Lilrevuk can tell you more about this then me.

ps. I just wanted to flash something. :D :D

If I remember, Mad Dogs is just RPC1 and Liggy's is both RPC1 and booktype, so I would go for that... Make sure you have the right firmware for your drive before you flash, and like the 360 make sure you do a dump of your orig incase something goes wrong (DOS is safer to flash, but I also did mine with BinFlash32 in Windows).

Before you do any of this, I would recommend getting hold of DVDInfo Pro and trying to change your booktype... If you can I wouldn't bother flashin it, in regards to 360 backups this is the only feature you need to enable (and I'm not sure you even need to do that any more with IXtreme...?).

No, you dont need to set booktpe to rom anymore, this mediacheck was patched in earlier xtreme versions so i guess it is still implied in ixtreme..also ImgBurn has an option to ´set booktype automaticly to rom´...

eses is correct. All current ixtreme firmware is set to read backups as dvd-rom. But, if your burner can do it, I would go ahead and do it just to be on the safe side. Thats just me though.
