RROD MS returns & flashing firmware

Post by andybb123 »

Quick question to see if anyone knows the answer, maybe its not even a problem

My 360 died from RROD on Xmas eve and the following week 3 other friends units died with the RROD as they were under warranty they have gone back to MS.

The 360's have been returned with the complete insides changed ie Motherboard / DVD replaced, we assume with refurb units as 2 have gone back again already with faults, I bought an arcade unit and flashed that and thats fine but as yet not had a chance to try flashing one of the returned ones.

But If on the replaced units only the case is original, can they be flashed as the serial number will no longer relate to the inner workings, as far as I know without the correct serial number you can't flash them.

Can anyone answer this ?

no man that is not right.
the ser number is not really anything.
all you have to do is use a 7 number "1234567" then a 5 number "12345"
that is for iprep and the backup of you orig firmware.

most of us flash by the ser number so it is easer to keep up with the firmware of the boxes we have flashed.
when you open the 360 they will be a ser number on the guts that is a ser number and then of course on the out side of the console.just make sure you keep them strait.

So you're saying that all the units you and your friends received back from MS had new DVD drives in them? If so, my guess is that they are all Hitachi V79s...that's what MS did with me. I requested a new DVD drive though, as my Samsung MS25 was sticky and wouldn't open without being nudged. It would appear that MS would like to have everyone using V79s so they can't be flashed.

Oh, I'm curious to know about the Arcade 360 you bought and flashed. What drive did it have? Are you able to play all your game backups with the Arcade with no problems?--how about game saves without the HD?--is there a limit to how many game you can play? I guess you can't really d/l anything from Live without the HD, but other than that is it perfectly fine for playing your backups? (I'm thinking of adding 1 or 2 Arcade versions to our collection for Link/LAN games and I wonder what the limitations would be.)

haha lots of questions in return for my one.

Ok firstly the serial number doesnt need to be entered and you can use any number thats good, the guide I followed was not clear on that & it read like it had to be the console serial number.

The units back from MS have all had replacement motherboards and DVD drive's fitted so MS have basically just replaced everything but the case, all have had Benq/Liteon/Philips drives in them by the looks of the DVD drawer, not opened one as the 2 I saw had other faults, one DVD bezel just fell off when unpacked and the other ejects spinning discs, they also have a new anti tamper sticker that looks like a bit like a vista / XP licence key tag rather than the old silver label.

Arcade unit had a Benq drive inside with an Aug 07 manufacture date, it came with a 256 mb mem card so I use that to store profile & backup game saves, just take it out and plug into the repaired RROd Xbox which is the one connected to live & has the Hd, everything plays perfect on the arcade originals and backups.
