I've noticed loads of topics in various forums about Xlink Kai. It does look like an alternative but you'll still need Live if you want extra game content like maps, etc. On the other hand if you want private matches (without annoying 10y olds 
) this could be perfect if the game does not support private matches via Live.
Since it's not link to a specific console, I wonder if you will be able to connect 360s and PS3s... (just started reading, so I'm not sure).
