...but are you referring to the 'regular' Talismoon Whisper Fan (5v) that you have done this mod to so that it could run at 12v?

I don't believe it affects the DVD drive at all. The ONLY difference between the Whisper Fan and the Whisper Max Fan is that the "Max" has a switch on it that can increase the fan's voltage from 5v to 12v. The only other way to get a fan to run at 12v is to do a "12v fan mod"...and (I guess) there are several ways to do that.

i have not done a 12v mod on a whisper fan(only stock fans)
i may get a max fan next time just to see how it works and what i think about it.

Some pretty good info here that definitely provides some things to think about for an upcoming xbox 360 owner. What kind of entertainment centers do you all house your 360s in? I have an open tv stand with 3 levels that keep the whole thing pretty well ventilated. I also keep my room at 72 F. I plan on testing the 360 a bit once I get it to see what kind of warmth it can generate. If the unit happens to contain a drive I'm willing to flash, then I'll probably throw in the 12v fan mod (soldering).

CoFree, I dont get how MS can find out that you have a different fan and ban you from XBL. If you have the WHISPER MAX FAN, that can only be a good thing cant it?

If the fan runs at different voltages, that would be easy to detect. Fan speed, voltage, RPM, and all that stuff is easily tracked on a PC using a few different software packages, including the BIOS. Why wouldn't the 360 be able to track these settings? Thats not saying that MS would ban someone because of different fan values, just saying that they could.

...and the only reason it is a concern to some (the 12v fan mod) is because someone over on Xbox-Scene reported that after they got banned from Live they called MS to ask why: The answer was because they were running a 12v fan mod. (I've learned not to believe everything I read on all the forums...you never know who might be embellishing a story to make themselves look better, or covering their tracks...or maybe some members are MS employees 'planted' to sew even more confusion into people's minds about Live bans.) But listening to Sadalius' knowledgeable and very clear explanation about how easy it is to detect a 12v fan mod makes perfect sense and that's reason enough for me not go get one...simply because 90% of my kids play time on the 360 is on Live.

if i remember right.in the write up the xbox live person said they COULD ban you for it,but they have not.i think he is the dumb ass here.
you need to keep in mind the 360 even stock will kick up to 12 volts if it gets hot.
so i would say the guy at live is the one with his head in the sand.

Do you know if that applies to the Whisper Fan as well...the 'regular' 5v Whisper Fan...will it kick up to 12v if the machine gets hot?

Yes, they do. They are 12v fans so they would "act" like the stock fans in operation. They just have better performance is all.

Sadalius, do you think it's fair to say then that if the stock fans go up to 12v when the machine gets too hot, that MS would not monitor the voltage of the fans or the RPM? If that's the case, it seems there should be absolutely no problem with running a 12v fan all the time?
