stuck on bootable flash drive
stuck on bootable flash drive
Ok here goes.
I have read all the tutorials and understand what I have to do to flash my benq drive, but here is the question. Can you use any usb flash drive? I have one but its a lexar POS. I follow the steps in iPrep and attempt to make the flash drive bootable. It tells me it was successful, so I reboot enter my bios, make the flash drive the first boot option and I get non bootable disk, insert bootable media and try again (or someting to that effect). Now if I goto start-run-cmd and type in the drive letter for the flash drive the run the autoexec from there it does run....So i guess the main question is does iPrep automatically make the flash drive bootable, or do I need to extract the dos files off an actual boot disk to make it bootable. I am assuming that my bios will allow me to boot from usb cause the option is there (not positive it does though). Im using an MSI 865pe neo2-ls Mobo with the latest bios if that helps. Thanks in advance for any replies

Re: stuck on bootable flash drive
as long as you input the right drive letter for your flash Iprep will make it bootable.
No all flash drives will not work. Most will it is rare to get one that wont.most of the time those will boot but have a problem taking the dump from the 360
in my bios i had to change two settings for the computer to boot of the usb flash
i had to
boot from other devices
boot from "usb zip"
then i have to power down and power back up for it to work
if i do a restart it want boot on the flash ever.
if you have a floppy you can se if that will work just to make sure you have somthing to fall back on.if you cant get the boot flash working.

Re: stuck on bootable flash drive
i thought this post looked familiar lol. its on 360mods and i answered it there lol.
Re: stuck on bootable flash drive
ok no good. Here is what i do.
1. I made the drive bootable with iprep. no problems there.
2. went into my bios and under advanced features, there is an option for boot order. Naturally it had my primary HD listed. I changed that to mu usb drive that showed in the drop down list. There are 3 lines available to put in boot orders. Primary, second and third with an option at the bottom fo try alternate boot devices.
primary: usb drive
second: disabled
third: disabled
try alternate devices: no
I have tried the alternate devices box with both yes and no but it makes no difference cause here is the message I get onve I save and exit out of my bios:
boot failure
reboot and select proper boot device
or insert boot media in selected boot device
press any key to continue
so im thinking right now that booting from usb is not possible with this pc. I cant boot from floppy cause I have no a: soooooo possible to boot from cd? not sure, or is there an alternate method? boot into safe mode with command prompt and run the autoexec manually? I don't know lol

Re: stuck on bootable flash drive
well on mine i set it
Boot order:
1 usb zip
2 cd/dvd drive
3 hddrive
there is a way to do it off a cd boot but there your computer has to be able to boot on to it.
ive never done the cd boot thing
i would just pick up a floppy drive.(internal drive)not the usb floppy that most places have.
maybe one of the other guys will have something to offer

Re: stuck on bootable flash drive
ok....
might it matter what port the usb drive is plugged into?? I leave it in the same port that iprep made it on but my pc has 6 ports in the back and 2 in the front. Im using one of the two in the front

Re: stuck on bootable flash drive
Booting from CD is possible, but it depends on what file system you have on your HDD. If it's in NTFS, you would need an NTFS boot cd so you would be able to read and write from the HDD while booted up from it. If it's fat32, it won't be quite as hard, as you can burn this image and be in dos. You just have to have a FAT16 or FAT32 partition on your HDD to use it though.

if your computer did not come with a floppy .I bet it will boot from a usb.you just have to get the setting right
Re: stuck on bootable flash drive
ok think I got it. went and stole my neighbors floppy drive and made a 3.5 floppy the bootable device. Followed the steps and all went smoothly. Litle nervous to go test it out though lol.
only, well not really problem I had was the SATA cable needed to be in the back of the card, not the top port. It was stuck on 7x0f until I plugged it into the other port. Thanks for all the help will let you all know if it was successful
