I have an odd question about flashing your drive. Is it classified as illegal if you flash your drive? A friend of mine wanted to backup his disks that he owns but is afraid that if he flashes his drive he is doing something illegal. So is it legit to flash your drive?

it's not illegl to flash your drive- it is however illegal to pirate games // 1 backup per original copy is fine

your warrenty will also be invalid from modifying your system & it is also against the xbox-live terms & conditions to use a modified system on the network so there is a risk of your console being banned.

making 1 backing up of you orig game.
The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA)
says you cant.
but
I have not heard of one person that has got in trouble for just making a back for them self from a orig game they own.
now
that is not to say you cant but ive not read or heard about anyone.
on the other hand
if you make a backup copy of a game and sell it.
you can bet its just a matter of time before the men in black will show and off to jail you go.

as far as flashing your console.
you can do what ever you want to it.its your.
but
like MSK said it will break the agreement on XBL and they can/will ban you if they see a bad game backup and/or other things they could be looking for that we dont know about.
