How To Half Eject Liteon With Paperclip?

Post by mobaby »

I don't have the CK3, so I'm trying to use the "paper clip method" to half-eject the drive, required to read the dvdkey. Since I've got other factors to worry about in reading the key, I want to make sure I'm doing this step correctly. How exactly does one perform the paper clip method? Should the 360 be on when I shove the slider? I've tried it a few times, but no matter what I do, the 360 always pulls the tray back in when it's powered on/off. Not sure if that's correct or not.

Thank you!

ive not read about a paper clip trick.

on a ck3 you have the power on eject the dvd drive tray.
turn the power off close the tray half way (or a little more)
then turn the dvd drive power back on.
then get your key

I don't know anybody thats got the paper clip trick to work right. They always get a 0's or c's for the key when they tried it that way.

I haven't tried it, but from what I've read, people have had success by pushing the button to close the drive, then pulled the plug to the power of the drive (on the motherboard).

As I say I haven't tried that myself (so I accept no responsibility :P) but I'm sure I've read the drive stays half open/closed when you plug it back in

Well, I got a key out of my drive, finally. I did it three times and got the same key every time. It's 16 bytes long. I'll be doing research on the steps to perform now, including checking if this key is good or not (maybe it got the wrong key three times :P )

I'll post my steps in the other thread I have going. As for opening the drive half-way without a kit:

1) drive is connected through normal power cable to 360. SATA is disconnected. All serial connections are disconnected (nothing on R707, TX, etc...)

2) Turn 360 on
3) Loosen the power cable going from the drive to the mobo of the 360 at the mobo side. Get ready to pull it. Make sure not to loosen so much that it disconnects (won't eject if you do)
4) Eject drive with button on 360 and pull the drive's power when it's half open. (so pull it while it's opening the drive, but hasn't fully opened the drive)
5) Disconnect the eject wire from the power cable. Pin 3 (some call it 9). If you have the cable plugged into the 360, and you're looking at it with that connector on top and the cooling fans on the right, it's the wire that goes into the top left most pin on the connector, next to the two missing wires.
6) Plug it back in. Drive will remain open and ready to extract key.

That's for getting the drive half-open. I did not power off the 360 while getting my key three times. I'll post the full steps in my other thread, since it seems more appropriate there for anyone searching the forum archives.

top man, glad you got it....

Sounds a little tricky getting that tray in the correct position, I'll stick to the kit :P

If you;ve got the same key 3 times out of 3, I think you'll be alright. I always dump fw twice/thrice to be sure like that as well ;)

I found something of the paperclip method:
Paper clip method

1. Locate the black slider on the right-side on the bottom of the drive (see picture)
2. Use a paper clip or screwdriver to press the slider all the way in
3. The tray should slide or pop out, pull it half-way open

People says that it works!
