Replacing Hitachi 0078FK with Hitachi 0047DJ
I have tried, with no success, to flash a Hitachi 0078FK with a Hitachi 0047DJ.
If someone can direct me to a tutorial or post that clearly explains how to do this, i would be very appreciative. I have successfully flashed a sammy to sammy, but this has got me stumped. I am a neewbie. I also apologize if there is a document out there that i did not find. I did a search, but could not find this particular subject. Thanks in advance, this site is amazing.

I'm not sure what your trying to do here. Are you trying to spoof one drive to report as another? If so, what drive are you putting into the 360 and what are you trying to get it to report as?

Re: Replacing Hitachi 0078FK with Hitachi 0047DJ
I am trying to replace a bad 0078FK with a new 0047DJ. I am trying to put the 0047DJ into the 360 and have it report as the 0078FK. I hope I haven't bricked the 47. it came up with an E66 error the last time I tried it. I thought I did my homework on this but evidently not. I am new at this and will take any guidance at this point. I think I want to spoof the 78 to the 47. Just not getting it right. Do you have any other suggestions? I'm not doing anything fancy. Just trying to play my originals. Thanks.

ok, if your trying to replace a 78 with a 47, here is what you do.
You have to dump both drives firmware out. Use Firmware toolbox to do this. Once you have them dumped, open the 78 firmware and copy the key from it. Check to make sure that its a valid key too. Then open the 47 firmware, paste the key and click the button to replace it. Then spoof it to a 78. The differential flash it. Thats it. Your 47 should now report to the xbox 360 that its a 78 (what came out of it originally) and also should give it the right key when its queried for it.

Re: Replacing Hitachi 0078FK with Hitachi 0047DJ
ok, here goes:
- Boot PC with 360 DVD powered off.
- At this point I have the 78 & 47 drive dumped. I have the 47 drive connected but off.
- Run mode_b 1460 from command line to connect to DVD in windows. Turn drive on, works fine. drive detected. Put Game in DVD, detected by windows.
- Run 360FWTb. Open 78 original.bin to read key. Copy key.
- Open 47 original2.bin, dumped file, paste key.
- Spoof to 78. Message in toolbox says "** Firmware Spoofed as GDR3120L00780 **"
- Direct drive Flash (GDR only) Differential Flash (Patch). DVD selected in upper window.
- Have to check box [] "use classic mode to read differences ( only v59 and lower)" - internal flash does not work, if I select internal flash I get error " Cannot communicate with drive, make sure it is visible on windows". At this point it is visible in windows. Select check box, reads differences, 9003D000, 9003E000.
- I select "47flash.exe" from drop down. Again, Internal flash does not work at this point.
- Click "Start Flash" button. Program sits for a long time, comes back with error "verify step failed for sector 3D000 Do you want to retry? Yes or NO. If I select YES, program just loops with error for same sector. If I select NO, it drops to next sector and fails on it also. If i select no again, the program stops. If I try anything else, the program aborts.
- Reboot PC and try again.
I am running XP on a spare 733MHz pc. I have a VIA controller, I am using one of the two internal connections, I have the Xbox 360 I/O drivers loaded, I run the mode_b and it works properly, just can't figure out what I am missing.
- Scratching my head. Thanks for listening.

I was just wondering if I missed a step or was using the wrong utility. Thanks for all of your help.
Re: Replacing Hitachi 0078FK with Hitachi 0047DJ
I strictly use firmware toolbox for hitachi's. I will say this, hitachi's can be a pain in the ass to get to work right when it comes to dumping them or flashing them. It sounds like you used the proper steps, but here is one thing I do different. I turn my hitachi on when the windows loading screen first comes on. I use a connectivity kit so I use the mode b button to make it easier. I have seen some people turn them on and eject them everal times as windows loads to get them to work properly.

Re: Replacing Hitachi 0078FK with Hitachi 0047DJ
Can you tell me where to get the firmware toolbox you are referring to? Is it different from the 360fwtb.exe? I have not been able to get the dvd recognized by windows from bootup. I am using an XECUTER CK3 PRO and have tried the mode b switch at different times during the boot of windows with no luck and opening and closing the tray. The drive does get detected when I run the Mode_b from command line. There are also two internal SATA ports on the card. I will try the other one. The Samsung was MUCH easier. Thanks!
Re: Replacing Hitachi 0078FK with Hitachi 0047DJ
We have firmware toolbox available for download in our download section.
When you have your computer booted up with the drive connected in mode b, does it show up in "My Computer"? If it doesn't, does the drive show up in "Device Manager"? If it does, does it have a yellow exclamation mark on it? If it doesn't, go into the properties of the drive from device manager and click the volumes tab. Then click the populate button and see if it will fill in the information. If it has a yellow exclamation mark or won't populate the information, your going to have problems doing this drive. You might even have to try from a different computer. If it will populate the information, the drive should then show up in "My Computer" and you should be able to dump it.

Re: Replacing Hitachi 0078FK with Hitachi 0047DJ
Been real busy last few days. On bootup with CK3 in Mode B, which is red light right? windows does not see the drive at all. I have to run mode_b from the command line for windows to see the drive. Everything works up to the patch differential step. Then it doesn't see the drive. Is it possible to take the Samsung that I flashed for my other system and spoof it to the 78? If the Hitachi is this wacky, would I be saving myself more headaches if I went that route? Do I have to take the Samsung back to it's original state before I do spoof and what is the safest route for that? I am going to try one more PC before I change my line of attack. I hate to feel that I was beaten by the Hitachi.
Re: Replacing Hitachi 0078FK with Hitachi 0047DJ
well the hit v78 and v79 are a pain
ive not had much trouble from the older hit dvd drive.
if you want to use a sam drive that is fine but they do come with there own set of headaches
here is a guide for going from a hit to a sumsung.

Re: Replacing Hitachi 0078FK with Hitachi 0047DJ
I finally got a different PC to install the controller. Everything was going great, the hit 47 was recognized by the system at boot up, went to flash the drive and received all kinds of errors. I think the drive is bricked. No response at all. Won't open. Do you have any suggestions for a bricked drive? I've seen articles about recovering from this but not a lot of detail. I really thought i had it this time. ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I can't afford to keep buying drives. Thx.
Re: Replacing Hitachi 0078FK with Hitachi 0047DJ
well
it does sound like a brick
there is a way to get the key from the chip on the pcb,but there is only a hand full of people than can do it and i dont know any that will. Its just to hard for what it cost to get a new one.
if i was replacing my dvd drive and was going to have to spoof anyway
i would put in a v28
