Help using Slax for ModeB

Post by jbustin »

I have been having a really hard time using any version of Slax to put a 78fk or 79fl drive into modeB. I have sucessfully done all different versions of the Hitachi drives before, as well as some Samsungs and Benqs no problem. Before, I used the Two-wire method for all the Hitachi's. Now i am trying to use SLax.
I've checked the Slax page and various forums and I seem to meet all the requirements of the software to use Slax no prob. I have the same motherboard as other people that have been able to use Slax sucessfully. The problem I have is when i boot Slax, it gets to the clover (or black dos prompt, whichever version you use) and i press enter to boot. It loads normally and skips past "spinning up disc" and stops at "searching for USB". If i let it search it'll eventually end and say something down the line of fatal error this should never happen. So i went ahead and saved all the files from the Slax root and put them on a Usb. Rebooted from CD and when i get to the "Searching USb" it loads fine and goes to the Slax login screen, where i can log in and do whatever the program was intended for. But never will it put the drive into modeB. I have tried every variation of turning computer on first or waiting for Slax and turning on the xbox. When i shoot into the Bios or Boot order screen, the drive is clearly visable. Windows will not see it because it's never reaching modeB. I have put numerous Hit drives into modeB and know all the signs but these two drives are going to be the end of me. Everything will be wonderful once i can get modeB kicking, birds and flowers, the whole nine.
Is there anything i am over looking? Is Slax not compat with the dreaded Vista? Has anyone else had this problem? If anyone could help it would be great, Thanks!

The first thing I would say was try it from a CD... If you've seen the spinning up disc.... message then Slax can see the drive... Do you have anything other drives plugged into your SATA??

I always get Mode-B from windows now. You can either try it from a DOS Prompt, or there is an option in both xtractor reader and Jungle Flasher.

Thanks lilrevuk,

Ill try Jungle flash cause i have it somewhere. I usually do boot Slax from cd but its strange. It gets to the Searching for usb and times out if i dont put in the Usb with Slax on it. I have both my Cd rom drive and Harddrive plugged into Satas 1 and 2. I primarily use sata 3 for xbox. i have tried unplugging the other 2 and using Sata 1 as my xbox and Sata 2 as my Cdrom drive.
So your saying in jungle flasher there is an option to modeB it through windows opposed to DOs.

yeah it's a custom cdb sent to the drive which triggers mode b...

There is also the command on it's own as a DOS Prompt, I think you can get hold of that here

Thanks man your really helpful.

I used jungle flasher and behold it worked. You the man! Go fig with Vista, my new problem is vista will now not reboot haha. I get an annoying error that says app missing or corupt 0xc00000F. So im and trying to reinstall or repair the OS with the original boot up disk but it is freezing at the windows loading screen. But as for 78Fk ModeB jungle flasher is the way to go! Ill be searching the net now to get my comp back in action to finish the flashing process but at least it modeB'd.
Thanks again!

Not a problem my man, anytime...

Strange how Vista has gone tits on you... I wouldn't have thought it was anything to do with flashing, but I'm not %100 on that. Glad to hear you got the flash done though :P
