How to replace a hitachi 0078FK with a benq drive.

Post by yginesta »

I am trying to help my friend with his Xbox 360. He tried to flash it and messed up his 0078FK drive. I was able to buy a cheap benq drive from another friend. I am having trouble getting this to work. I have flashed the benq drives before, but this process is not the same. I have downloaded the benq ixtreme v1.4 and also the dosflash 1.3. I am not sure how to add the orig.bin file into the mix using iprep. Please help me with a step by step instructions to get this process done. Thanks in advanced.

ok, replacing the DVD drive on any xbox 360 is exactly the same procedure on all of them. You need to have xbox 360 firmware toolbox, latest version of course. You also need to have the orig.bin from each drive, but you need to be able to tell which orig.bin came from what drive. First, open the firmware from your hitachi with firmware toolbox. It will display the drive key. Highlight and copy the drive key. Then close that firmware and open your Benq firmware and paste that key from the hitachi in to replace the benq key. Then click the replace key button. Then, with firmware toolbox still open with the Benq firmware, click tools->spoof firmware and click Hitachi GDR3120L 0078 and then click Apply Spoof. A box will pop up saying that the string detection has been changed, click OK and close your firmware toolbox. Your Benq original is now prepared. Easiest way to deal with it from here is to extract the contents of the ixtreme package for the Benq and then copy the prepared Benq original firmware into the folder of the speed you want for the drive. Make sure that the firmware is named orig.bin and then double click the Make ixtreme firmware icon. It will then make your hacked firmware. From here you have two options. Use iprep and rename the hacked firmware to benq-cfw.bin and copy it into the /backups/xxxxxxx/xxxx/ folder. The x's represent your 7 digit serial/5 digit serial. Then just use the fben command to flash it. Or just copy the firmware the way it is to your boot device that has dosflash on it and use the dosflash commands to flash it.

If you can't figure out the spoofing part, shoot me a PM.

Thank you so much for answering my question. I was doing something different, but working on the same path. I have 2 questions: 1- Whats the easiest way to extract the key from the benq drive? 2- you talked about setting up the usb drive with Iprep. This means that once I have spoofed the key I can open up Iprep ( any version) and upload the firmware I just created and set up the SATA controller and format my USB drive. After my USB drive is formatted I add the DosFlash 16 files into the root of the USB and then runs through the idump 1234567 12345 and the iflash 1234567 12345 commands until the drive is flashed. Is this the correct way of doing it?

Easiest way is to use iprep 101 v6. iprep will prepare your usb stick for you. Once it's prepared, turn your computer off and connect the benq drive but don't turn it on yet. Boot with your usb stick and when you get to dos, agree to the terms by typing y and press enter. Then type rben 1234567 12345 and hit enter, follow the onscreen instructions as to when to turn on your Benq, when to turn it off and so forth. This will dump your original firmware and create a hacked firmware at the same time. Then you can turn the drive of and boot back into windows and make a copy of the original and hacked firmware for safe keeping. On the USB stick, you should be able to find them in the /backup/1234567/12345/ folder named benq-ofw.bin and benq-cfw.bin. Now take the hitachi firmware and open it with firmware toolbox and copy the key. Then open your benq-cfw.bin with firmware toolbox and paste the hitachi key in and click replace key. Then click tools->spoof firmware and then click on Hitachi GDR3120L 0078 and click Apply Spoof. Click ok on the box that pops up and then close firmware toolbox.

Then shut down the computer and boot back to your USB stick, this time type in fben 1234567 12345 and hit enter and follow the onscreen instructions to flash the now spoofed firmware to your benq drive. When it finishes flashing, your done. Put the drive back in your 360 and have fun.

OK I think I am getting on track. So to extract the key from the benq drive.

* open Iprep 101 v6 and load any Ixtreme version firmware.
* set up the SATA controler and then format the drive.
* After this is dont do i just add the dosflash 16 files to the Root of the USB or leave it as is?

Sorry I know you are probably getting really frustrated with me. LOL

iprep will do all the prep work on your USB stick for you, it will add all the files necessary for the job. You just put your USB stick in a USB port, run iprep, select your ixtreme firmware, check the box for patch MTKFlash, make sure your sata card is shown in the box, select your USB stick as the target drive, and check the box that says Format/Make device bootable. Then click the Prepare Destination button. Once it says that it's complete, your USB stick is now ready, no other files needs to be added, with the exception of opening the hacked firmware that it creates with firmware toolbox to replace the key and do the spoofing.

Don't worry about me getting frustrated, takes alot for that to happen :D

Oh ok thanks. The Ixtreme file that I should be opening in iprep is the Benq ixtreme 1.4 chosing what ever speed i want. In Iprep I should open it with the benq ixtreme firmware option not the Samsung. Wow After all I think i finally got it. I am going to give this a try when I get home. Thanks alot.

Hey guys,

I wanted to let you guys know that the set of instructions provided to me by you all were awesome. I m was able to flash the benq drive with no problems. I am working on writing a tut with screen shots and stuff for anyone to follow. Also I wanted to ask you guys. I have a friend that asked me to mod his Xbox, but he has the Elite with the Hitachi 0079FL drive. This is the one that requires the chip to get it into mode b correct. Once the chip is installed you can flash it like a 0078FK drive. Get back to me with some input in this. Thanks for all of your help.

Yeah I bet its a biotch. I have looked at some sites and it shows where the solder has to go and it look tough. This chip is needed just to get the drive into mode b or is this also needed for something else. I wonder what Microsoft has in stores for next. LOL

he chip gives it a debug mode.its my understanding the the v79 had no debug mode so you could not get in it.
once you get the chip on you can dump/flash it.

Cofree is partially right about the chip, hitachi removed not only the command set to get the drive into mode b, but also flashing commands. The 79 passkey contains the proper extensions to add those commands back into the flash chip data stream. Which is why if your doing your friends a favor by flashing their drives for them, each 79 requires a key. That way you can update the firmware later down the road. You could solder the chip in, flash and then remove it to do another, but then that drive would loose the ability to be updated until another passkey is installed. But, once the key is installed, it's just like flashing a 78.

What I wish they had done was to come up with something like what I saw a while back that they are working on for the Wii called the Wlip instead of a solder solution. The wlip is a solderless solution that clips onto the chip itself by simply lining up the adapter and pressing down on it till it clicks in. Google for it and you'll find the site with a video of the installation, it's pretty neat. They go from a stock wii to a modded wii in less than 10 minutes. If they had something like that for the 79, then it would be as simple as removing the epoxy crap from around the flash chip and line it up, press down, ready to flash.

One can only dream though :D
