iPrep 8.8 - DosFlash finding 8 banks on Benq?

Post by j_nolesfan »

I've posted this on 360mods forum as well but I get the impression that the level of expertise is a little bit higher here. I'm hoping you guys can help me out. I've got a Benq drive that so far, I tried on two different PC's using using this SATA card http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid ... 1A&cpc=SCH. Plus, a local guy who is modding tried his hand with my drive and whatever controller/PC combo that he has that has worked for him in the past, at least for other drives, not positive about Benq drives. What does display, as you can see in the picture attached is a SST25VF040 4 Mbit SPI Serial Flash chip http://www.sst.com/products.xhtml/seria ... SST25VF040 connected to the port that the drive is on. This chip has 8 memory banks instead of the 4 that the Benq is expected to have. So, the whole process fails. If I'm using a floppy, it runs out of disk space. If I'm using USB Flash, it completes the read and gives an error because the file is too large (512 k). One thing I can say with certainty, there is no other device hooked to my PC that should interfere with this process. I've physically disconnected every other drive and disabled all onboard controllers in the BIOS. The only things hooked up to my PC are the floppy or USB Flash and the Benq drive.

I also tried JungleFlasher but my PC wants to lock up whenever I'm in Windows and the drive is attached. Or, it doesn't find it if I boot with the drive attached.

I've tried so many times that I can't get the drive to respond to an eject anymore when it's connected to the 360 console. I get the red light on the lower right (hardware failure). I don't know if this is an issue or not. I was told that it's impossible to brick a Benq drive that I should always be able to get the firmware data as long as it hasn't been erased. I don't think that has happened here. At least, I hope it hasn't.

In summary, has anyone else seen this? How might I investigate it either through hardware or other means? Is there any other way in the world to dump the drive key or find it written printed, or otherwise stored somewhere else?

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

I've never seen anything like that. I'd like to take a look at that drive personally just to see what gives. I was thinking Benq's used a different flash chip, but it has been a while since I've done a Benq. Other than dosflash seeing the wrong drive connected, I don't exactly know what to say.

Dalecheesy or backslash may have ran into this and might offer up some suggestions.

well i can honestly say i have never seen this either other than googling it after i saw this post..on another site
i've been using dosflash 1.6 16-bit version
This is what I do. i boot into DOS.Turn on 360.Run dosflash. It will say "0. MtK intro failed on 0xEC00....".I press Y.Dosflash displays the other ports and then this info about the drive

Manufacturer ID: 0x00
Device ID: 0x01
Name: SST(25VF040)(Serial)
Size: 512KB

I turn the 360 on and off.I select 0(port EC00),enter 'W' to write and then the name of hacked firmware.dosflash will say wrong firmware size.that's it.
Looks like you are not alone..

Well i have no idea because of the time i spent reading i did not find an answer...

He's not using lite-on method. Doshflash works with samsung, benq's and lite-ons. He's using dosflash to read the banks and it's recognizing 8 banks instead of 4 once the R command was issued.

look at the pic

& above where it shows the banks in there it CLEARLY shows LITEON options ie GET LITEON KEY.

although he typed for the Benq so its sending the incorrect commands to the drive.

ok but i was sure if you were doing a benq it shows benq in the options part not LiteOn.....

regardless of that i'd use iprep 101 v006 for a benq i think its better imo.

Yup, shows you all the options regardless what drive you have connected to it. Personally, I would use jungleflasher, but I know thats not an option for him since he said it locks his computer up trying to run it.

I'm going to Google it again and see if I can find that reference you found. Until now, I was the only one I knew of with this problem but that may be where my local contact posted his problem which means it's the same drive

Also, thanks guys, I feel like I've gotten more honest consideration here in a few minutes than what I got over at the other board in two weeks.

Really now? Hey, I'm all about getting the key out of this thing. I've got a brand new Sammy just waiting for a key so my console will be good as new again.
