The serial number that's written on the case of your 360 is embedded in the BIOS. That's what is compared against the server database.

Dont think so
the ser number that is on the out side of the case is just a normal ser normal so resalers can keep up with store stock.
the Cpu key is a lot different
and looks more like a dvd drive key

It's a unique RSA hashed serial code unique the the CPU in the board.
It's not stored anywhere locally in a plain easy to read format.

IP's/Mac's can all change and the 360 has an option to play around with the Mac address too, it's one of the fault finding task's if MCE isn't connecting to it.
Besides that the Mac address only applies to the internal Network Card and is used to talk to the 360.

When it comes to banning a console, anything that gets changed from what MS expect can get you banned, and it is ONLY the RSA serial that's logged and blocked.

Microsoft will defend the gaming experience for our users on Xbox Live, and will not approve using game cheating devices for the Xbox gaming system. This is a violation of the Xbox Live Terms of Use and its warranty. If users try to access Xbox Live with an Xbox installed with modified hardware or unapproved software, their Xbox will be blocked from accessing the service now and in the future. Microsoft reserves the right to take other appropriate action in the future. This could include canceling the user's subscription.

Unfortunately, after an Xbox console has been modified, it can never be put back to the original, unmodified state that is in compliance with terms of use for Xbox Live. Aside from your warranty being voided, also no repair can be allowed for your modified Xbox.

The software included in the Xbox Product is licensed to you, not sold. You are licensed to use the product software only on your Xbox and you may not reverse engineer it, except as expressly permitted by applicable law notwithstanding this limitation (Check instruction manual page 18 Section E and G).

I know this doesn't really answer our question on what actually gets banned, (yes I know it's the serial number) but at least they did respond with a some what decent answer.
