How to tell which Hitachi drive?

Is there a way to tell which Hitachi drive you have? v78 VS v79?

The only for sure way is to actually open the 360. Which is unfortunate. Everything else is just a guess. You can go to this website http://www.360drives.com/ and put in as much information as you can about your 360 and it might be able to get you what you want to know. This database is built by people that go there and put in information as it pertained to their xbox so maybe you might get something useful, but you might not.

If your careful about how you open your 360 you can make it look pretty descent when putting it back together.

Thanks for the info. I friend of mine was asking and I didn't know - so I thought I'd ask here. Looks like I'll be taking his apart.

It's a fairly new Elite, so I'm assuming it's a v79, although I could be wrong.

I would say that if the tray matches the hitachi picture, then it probably is a v79. Although a few of the first elites has a v78, but the benq is becoming more and more prominent in the elites as with the premiums. I can't say about the "arcades" though. I've only tried two of them and one was a v79, the other was a benq.
