Hitachi 0078FK
I've done five BenQ drives... but I'm working on a Hitachi 78FK now... and I'm not sure what to do... do you know of any good tutorials for them? Thank you.

78's aren't to bad really. The 78's needs a seperate power supply because you have to use Slax to get them into Mode B. A connectivity kit is recommended if you don't use the 360 as a power supply because you'll need to eject the drive at a certain power. You'll also need the latest version of 360 Firmware Toolbox, currently version 4.6. You'll also need a DVD movie or an original 360 game disk. Here is what I do.
First I turn on the computer and put in my slax cd. (You might want to go into your computers BIOS and make sure that it's set to boot from CD)
Since my computer's sata controller has raid, I wait until the raid controller has done it's scan for hardware and then turn the 78 on.
Slax starts to boot up and along the way, it will seem to freeze on "spinning up drives". Ejecting the drive will let it continue. Once it reaches the login prompt, the drive should be in mode B. I always test it before doing anything else by trying to eject the drive. If its in mode B it will take two presses of the eject button to eject it, and when you try to close it back using the eject button, it will open back up all on its own. Just push the tray closed with your hand to get it to stay closed. At this point, hit the reset button on your computer. This is why having a seperate power supply is important. If you had it on the same power supply and you hit the reset, the drive would re-initialize and not be in mode B any longer.
Now since it's in mode B, my raid controller will see it and be able to continue to boot. Windows will see it as well. Open up firmware toobox. Click tools->Direct Drive Dump. Make sure the 78 is chosen in the first box and click RAW Dump Firmware As button. It will then ask you to put in a DVD movie or an original 360 game disk. You can use the eject and close buttons on the program to make things a little easier. Once you insert the disk, wait about 20 seconds or so and then click ok. It should then ask you to name the firmware (orig.bin) and choose a location to save it. Sometimes you'll have to click the Raw Dump button again. Once you choose the FW name and where to save it, the firmware will be read out. It will ask you if you want to verify it, choose yes. It will then ask you if you want to open it, choose yes. Check the key and make sure that its valid. If it is, copy the crap out of it for a backup. If it isn't, re-dump.
Now that I have a dump of the firmware, now it's time to create the hacked firmware. Click tools->Smart Hack Patcher. It will ask you to make sure that you've opened and original firmware. Click ok. For output file, choose where you want to save it and name it (hacked.bin) Make sure that the Rule Set is set to match your drive and at the speed that you want it to be at. I like 12x personally. Then click Generate File button. A few seconds later, it will ask you if you want to open it. Choose yes. Then click Tools->Direct Drive Flash->Differential Flash. Make sure the 78 is in the first box and then click Read and Detect Differences. In the Flash This Sectors section, some information will fill in. When it does, click start flashing. It will then flash the drive. When it finishes, close firmware toolbox, eject the disk and put the drive back into the 360 and re-assemble and enjoy.

Re: Hitachi 0078FK
I think the 78 is the easiest to do, Hitachi's can be flashed on (almost) anything

And if at first you don't succeed..? Order the damn card!

Mirc is a place to chat, post up on the site for help!!!
Re: Hitachi 0078FK
I actually think that the Benq's are the easiest. About the same procedure as a ms-28, just less seconds to wait between the power off and back on, but the 78's are pretty easy. Unless you forget to have a DVD movie or a 360 game on hand when it asks for one....
