Hitachi drive, problem with backups

I have a pretty good idea of whats going on (i think) from what Ive ready but I figured Id ask here. Flashed my friends Hitachi 47 drive a few months back. He just decided recently to start playing it and the games I had given him weren't working. I thought maybe the flash was bad since regular games worked but the backups didnt so I took it back to him to reflash it. Hooked it up to JF and the drive was already reading ixtreme 1.51 for firmware. Decided to reflash it just in case. All is well, hook it up to try it and same thing, couldnt get any games to work except the originals and on occasion a backup starts up.

This means the laser is going out right? Only fix is to try and clean it and hope for the best? Or replace the laser....POT calibration have anything to do with this? Thanks for the help and I was unsure if I should post this here, so if its in the wrong spot my apologies.

Its most likely laser problems. Backups are harder to read than the original games, and the fact that it plays some but not others attests to the fact that the laser is going.

Pot tweaking will work, but only try it if you have cleaned the laser and still nothing...

Ok, thanks for the link.

If nothing seems to work, I could always just get another laser assembly right? or is there more involved with that then just swapping them out.

Nope, swapping laser's is easy. All you do is remove the old laser and put in the new laser.

You have to get a laser for the hitachi drive, and they are a bit harder to find.
