If you use any other speed besides 12x its easier for M$ discover your xbox is modded. Also, if the drive is having a hard time reading the disk, it will drop to a lower speed...
To use a different speed by default I believe you need to edit the FW, you may have to hex edit it, im not sure. Google it, there may be a tut for it.
