I'm not sure what the differences between the two are, but, from looking at the descriptions, the HD63 is listed as being compatible with either the hitachi or the samsung. The HD67, on the otherhand, doesn't specify one or the other. This is going from the listings on ebay.

But, if I go to rich's PSX parts site, they list them as the HD63 as being for the Hitachi's and the HD67's being for the samsungs. It also says that the HD67 will not replace the HD63 so that would lock it down specifically by brand. Judging by that, if I were to just replace the laser, I would get the HD67.

sadalius wrote:the backups can still be the source of the problem. We all know that no two dvd reader lasers are made the same. This particular one could have been in the tuning phase at beer:30 on a Friday and the tech could have cared less about getting it properly tuned and it just hit marginally acceptable and left it at that. But still when it comes to reading problems, I would try different media first, and then (yes I know it costs more money, but saves the trouble) buy a replacement drive. Thats just me though.
I still think it may be media or the burn. I have a samsung that will play anything I throw at it, but my hitachi will reject the same disk. Just my opinion though. I would try someone elses burner and some Singapore verbatims before I wrote it off.

I agree, and would rule media out first, just try the same rip on a different disc....

The thing is that replacing the lens is much cheaper than to even try with another media or the pot calibration. I will try replacing the lens and see if that could solve the issue, if not ill consider the other options hence this is not my 360 just a friends one. Thanks for all the opinions and suggestions

I had a similar problem last night. I modded my buddies Xbox the other day. He brings me a Game yesterday so I can back it up for him. When he gets home he starts playing the game and it freezes and does not play anymore. I have tried this game in my xbox and it plays fine.

I used another brand DVD DL and the problem still happened. I had an old 0078 drive laying around the house and decided to swap lasers. I compared them to each other and they both had the same part number. After I put everything back together it worked like a charm. Hope this info helps some of you out there.
