Most probably someones tried flashing it and screwed it up, try playing a dvd movie in it. If your lucky it might just be the laser kaput and you could try dumping it to see if the key looks valid and spoofing it into your other drive if you still have it mike.

dale is right. If you put in a dvd and it wont play, your in good shape.
When you try to play games does it instantly say open tray or does it read then say open tray & or sometimes tell you to put the game in a 360 console?

As far as that message, I used to get that on my samsung (ms28) with originals, the laser was pretty worn out, I swapped it since.
Since the xbox was bought off ebay, its likely that someone messed up the flash, and you now have the wrong key. If you have a spare drive, you can test the key to make sure its belongs to your xbox.
Lots of times, if a flash goes bad, and the key for a drive is lost, the person will just spoof in a key that looks good, and sell it on ebay.
