MS to Block 'unauthorized' Xbox 360 Storage Devices

Post by CoFree »

Don’t use unauthorized Xbox 360 Storage Devices
Image
When Preview Program members start receiving the Xbox 360 system update next week, one of the changes is that unauthorized Memory Units will no longer work with the Xbox 360. If you’ve moved your profile or saved games onto one to “back it up,” you’d better move it back onto an authorized Xbox 360 storage device prior to taking the update. If you continue to use an unauthorized Memory Unit after the update, you will not be able to access your stored profile or saved games.

If you need help identifying officially licensed Xbox 360 storage devices or accessories you can read more about the licensed accessories program on Xbox.com

Datel "Disappointed" By Xbox 360 Memory Unit Lock Out
by Tom Ivan's

Third party peripheral firm Datel has said that Microsoft’s decision to lock out unlicensed memory cards on the Xbox 360 prevents customers from exercising their freedom of choice.

"When preview programme members start receiving the Xbox 360 system update next week, one of the changes is that unauthorised memory units will no longer work with the Xbox 360," Xbox Live's director of programming, Larry Hryb, said earlier this week. "If you continue to use an unauthorised memory unit after the update, you will not be able to access your stored profile or saved games."

Datel, which make a range of Max Memory storage units for Xbox 360, isn’t happy with Microsoft’s decision.

"If the Major Nelson blog is to be taken at face value then we're disappointed to see that Microsoft are taking these steps to prevent customers from exercising their freedom of choice,” a company spokesperson told CVG. “Everyone is looking for ways to make their cash go further at the moment and we believe that Max Memory offers a good value, high capacity, alternative to the official memory unit."

An official Xbox 360 Memory Unit (512MB) retails for £29.99 at Game, while a Datel Max Memory 2GB Memory Unit for Xbox 360 can be bought online for £7 less.

The upcoming Xbox 360 system update will introduce Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm functionality to Xbox Live, among other features.

I don't like the decision that MS has made in regards to 3rd party memory cards, but to be fair, of course Datel would have this stance towards it. They are going to be loosing money in the devices they have on the market at the moment. I'm just waiting to see if they do anything about all the cloned HDD's that are in existance out there.

Damn, that would really suck. I was thinking about upgrading to a 250GB if they are ever sold apart from the modern warfare edition. Guess I should start thinking about deleting old demos.... :(

I heard that the 250 gb HDD is not going to work with other xboxes.

All xboxes are hard-coded to only accept 20, 60 and 120 gb hard drives

I don't think HDD's will be affected. I think this is aimed squarely at Datel's Max Storage device.

There's some speculation that the 250GB drive might be sold separately later, given prior business practices.

While M$ thinks the DYI HDD upgrades are not authorized, I don't think they would be able to block the 250GB on other consoles. Unless they glue it to the MW2 consoles, nothing is stopping anyone from plugging it into another console. THAT is legitimate.

...Of course, they could in theory lock the hard drive to the console. M$ doesn't follow logic, so they might do that.
