serial cable help

im new to flashing and ive got most of the equipment,at the mo ive got a friends onboard sata desktop a VIA 8237 and connectivity kit pro.im going to be using my laptop in the future too.What im struggling with is the serial cable,icant seem to find much info about it or what its for,can i use the cable that connects a monitor or does it have to be different,im not sure if its male or femalr at each end either.i was going to use the usb
but keep reading that i may need the serial if i get liteon freeze and have to use dos,some info on this confusion will be a great help for now as this is stopping me from having a go.thanks and i hope im making sence..

Did you not get a serial adapter (com port RS232) cable with your kit?, You need this to connect to your PC and Conectivity kit together

the pro comes wit the usb connector! just use that.if you dont have a usb for the ck3 pro or a serial adapter, then just get a psp usb cable at your local game reseller. there like 5 bucks and work! i know this...
