why wont my drive eject when put together?

Post by Zmakin »

so i have a 2006 sammy ms28( iknow its old, but it is what it is) that i just recently fixed after months and months of being without f/w on the whole 360. now when i got it to finally have f/w and hopefully be good to go i run into a whole other issue that doesn't deal with any software.

so when i try to eject my drive when in the 360 it does nothing... it attempts to eject the disk drive, and the lights on the front of the console all blink accordingly; but no tray comes out...

when i take the actual drive apart and set it back in the console and push the eject button it works prime, but only without the top of the disk drive actually installed back onto the drive itself. now i know i cant play games like this because they'd just fly out of the drive when i put them back in and spin up, but wtf!?

does anyone have any ideas as to how i could go about getting this issue fixed without having to purchase a new drive? oh, and one more thing; i can just pull the top of the drive's case off by about a half an inch while its sitting in the openned up console and it will start to open and close fine, but when i push it back down that half inch or so im back to nothing. and this is all in one power cycle( without turning the 360 off between pulling the case off or pushing it back on)

The tray is probably catching on the drive, or the bezel is catching on the faceplate. Samsung's are the worst for this, ive seen a few that do this. Either take off the bezel, see if that works, if not, you might need to do a bit of modifying to the top of the drive.

You can also replace the elastic in the drive near the gears that open the tray. Usually that wears out, and the drive will have issues opening and closing.

im definitely gonna have a look-see when i get home and to tinkering tonight. i'll play with some plyers and my drive and see what i cant work out... any other ideas as to something more specifically mechanical that is happening to my drive by chance?

i had definitely thought about the band on those gears too haggard, i was watching it while i had the drive completely out and open and it looked like it wasnt binding or catching on anything, but i'll throw a little lube or something on that too and check it out, appreciate the multiple ways to tackle this little issue

so it was neither of those two options haggard...

i have 2 sammy drives sitting around, so first thing i did was open them up and just switch the band around the tray gears. both seemed in the same condition, and fine, but i swapped just for the hell of it, and no luck.

tried taking the bezel off and it didnt do anything either...

so this is where i came to the point where i was like WTF? because i swapped my drives, and neither would work in the 1st console, but when i put either in the 2nd, working console they would both eject just fine. so for some reason when pushing the eject button on the 1st console, it just didnt have the power, or wasnt sending the full command to eject the tray...???

now heres where it gets really confusing. i tried to verify the 1st console on j/f after i updated it, but when i sent the outro to the drive it froze up the computer. before i tried to verify i had both consoles and both drives able to eject correctly. now after i got the verifying freeze i tried putting the 1st drive in the 1st console, no luck on ejecting. so before i reconnected the 2nd drive to the 2nd console i put the 1st drive(that now wont eject) into the 2nd console, but it didnt fix it this time, and the 1st drive wouldnt eject out of either console. so i tried putting the working 2nd drive into the 2nd console, now that B!tty isnt ejecting either...

so i tried one last thing to maybe get these things working again. i took apart my banned hitachi i have and tried hooking up both the 1st and 2nd drives up to this console to see if i couldnt get them to eject properly, but no luck. the hitachi drive does still eject in the hitachi console though, but none of the other consoles could get this drive to eject either.

so im thinking that this whole tray ejecting has something to do with my computer, j/f, and the consoles since they all worked before i had problems with sending the outro in j/f and having my computer freeze. so does anyone know of any glitches with j/f and tray ejecting, or does anyone know why it would seem that the drives are locked now? because when i hit the eject button on the console it attempts to open the tray, and if i spin the little gear on the front of the drives after i hit eject it will actually functionally open the drive for that time only, but it seems to make a click like im unlocking something that j/f did to the drive or something... ugh i dunno....
