Play PS3 Backups from a DVD-R / BD-R
If you didn’t know you can burn PS3 backups to a DVD-R or BD-R should the game fit; dual-layer media doesn’t work. But now you’re probably wondering, why would I want to do that? I got a 500+ GB drive for backing up games. Well take a look here and you’ll notice more than a few games have issues. Reports are coming in that games with problems *may* see improved compatibility when playing from an optical disc. It’s simple really:
1.Backup your [legitimately owned] game to the HDD using Backup Manager.
2.If you’ve backed up to an external FAT32 formatted drive:
◦Connect the drive to your PC and browse to X:\GAMEZ\<GAME ID>
3.If you’ve backed up to the internal HDD:
◦Connect to your PS3 with PS3 FTP Server
◦Browse to /dev_hdd0/game/LAUN12345/GAMEZ/<GAME ID>
4.You should see 2 directories: PS3_GAME & PS3_UPDATE — and 1 file: PS3_DISC.sfb
5.Burn those 2 directories and 1 file to a single layer DVD-R or BD-R.
6.Delete the game off your HDD.
7.JailBreak your PS3, insert the disc, load Backup Manager and load your game.
8.Store your original game disc for safe keeping. Thanks to greg at ps3-hacks.com

Ebtank,
This is a great find. I kept wondering when someone would use the backed up data and find a way to just create a playable disc with the data. None the less I am doing what most others are doing for the moment and waiting on the side lines. There is a viable reason to get in the mix and get dirty but with life responsibilities for the moment, I just don't have the time to tinker and test but that is why we have the amazing team here at robinhood's playground.
Thanks be to you all.

ebtank great find. I just have one question about this process. The list of game that will work with the backup manager is very short due to some problems when loading. The question i had is if you install the FTP server on the ps3 and then follow your instructions does the list need to be looked over to see if it can be played or not or does it not matter. I m just wondering i know that you need to run thje backup manager in order to run the dvd-r where you backuped those files to but does this mean that any game will work with the backup manager?
Re: Play PS3 Backups from a DVD-R / BD-R
I dont know for sure but its an idea, if u take the games that dont load off internal or external hdd and burn them it just might mean that i havent needed to do this yet but I will be sure to try one on a dvd-r if it wont load and will fit. the real test would be if you could burn a b ray disc of a game that wont load and have no problems,I know b ray disc cost some $$$ but not as much as having to buy a new ps3 game because your original got messed upnxdragon wrote:ebtank great find. Re: Play PS3 Backups from a DVD-R / BD-R
when you start bum,and click O to backup,if you have ext hdd connected to ps3 it shold ask you if you want to backup to ext.if you select no,then it asks if you want to backup to internal hdd..if there is a file in the game over 4gb,you will get FWrite fail...this means you HAVE to backup to internalOllie wrote:How can backup games through Back manage to an external HDD??

ollie man
you kind of hijacked the thread
this thread was about burning a game to a disc not
backing up to a HD
that being said
what format is the HD you are plugging in the PS3
it has to be fat32 not ntfs
