Shouldn't be too hard to check. There are a few ways to check. Get the trial version of "DVDInfopro" and check what it says for write capabilities of the drive.

Other than that... google the drive part number and they should say whether it's a DL drive or not.

And yet another way, if the drive has writing on the outside of the tray, it usually will display symbols for the writing / reading capability.
CD-ROM/Rewritable.
DVD-ROM / Rewritable / DVD+R DL

I found this out after assuming that my old NEC DVD Writer that I bought 2.5 years ago wasn't a DL. Looking at it more closely and I found that it had the "DVD+R DL" label on it.

If you have ImgBurn, you can check what formats it supports through tools-->drive-->capabilities. No extra software download is require that way.

I'm sure nero has the same tool as well...
