"Why don't you have a seat over here"
Every once and a while, a case pops up where a pervert used video games to lure in children to be molested. A while back some guy in Taiwan used a Wii for such ill purposes, and an American man used his role as an Xbox Call of Duty: World at War clan leader to try to lure children in. In other incidents, predators have been caught trolling the Xbox Live and Sony PlayStation Network looking for victims.
But what was particularly unusual about a recent case in Maryland was that it was a female predator who was arrested for using games to violate youth. California resident Rachel Ann Hicks, 36, posed as a 23-year-old and went on Xbox Live in the bid to meet teens for sex.
Earlier this year, she met a 13-year-old Maryland boy on Xbox Live. She initiated a relationship with the teen, sending him romantic text messages, and explicit pictures and movies.
Over Thanksgiving she drove up from Florida, after visiting relatives. Reaching Maryland she snuck into the boy's house and allegedly had sex with him while his parents were sleeping. The boy’s parents found out when they started looking over his text messages and discovered the woman's lurid messaging.
Catching her was a bit tougher. She had given the boy a fake name. But "with help from federal authorities" (likely a federal subpoena of Xbox Live records), her true identity was exposed and she was arrested.
She is currently being charged and the investigation is ongoing, as she is believed to have molested another teen, whom investigators are working to establish the identity of.
The case is unusual as the incidence of female predators appears to be much lower than male ones. On the Dateline: NBC's special To Catch a Predator, the predators looking to molest young boys or girls were almost exclusively men.
