PS3 Video Service as Early as Summer
By Tom Ivan
Sony is gearing up to launch its online TV and movie service for PS3 as early as this summer, according to the LA Times.

The question is not if an online video service is coming to PS3 but when. Last week Sony marketing executive Peter Dille said that the company aims to “separate the service from others you’ve seen or used” and consumers may get to see if the hype is justified this summer.

Citing ‘studio executives familiar with the plan’, the LA Times reports that Sony has been locked in licensing talks with studios in recent weeks. The initial version of the service will include movies and television shows. The company will embrace open standards, meaning that its video offerings will be compatible with a range of devices including PSP.

Competitor Microsoft already runs a movie and TV download service for Xbox 360 owners through Xbox Live. It offers more than 4,800 hours of video content, a quarter of which is available in high-definition.

The PS3 is a legit media machine, with the recent addition of XviD and DivX support inside the PS3 browser. If only it supported mkv without conversion, then it would dominate as a HD media center. Ah well, at least the mkv to vob process is pretty simple and works off a USB/PS3 HDD.
