Prosecute Parents for Giving Children Mature Games

Parents who allow their children access to violent game content should be fined up to $10,000 or be prosecuted.

This is what Bill Hastings – New Zealand's chief government censor – intends to introduce as a bill.

Speaking to New Zealand broadsheet newspaper, The Dominion Post, Hastings said that the law would send out a message that the nation will be strict on the crime of buying a mature game for underage consumers.

“They might think the offence is silly, but it ain't,” he said.

“There would be shock value to prosecuting a parent who gives their under-18 child access to a restricted game. It would send out a message that the enforcement agency means business."

During the interview, Hastings had cited studies which alleged that repeated exposure to violent game content had an adverse effect on player attitude. He stated that it was important that parents realised some games were created for adults, not children.

"I think the word 'game' can mislead people for sure,” he said. “It's not checkers.”

Hastings also spoke of the problems parents had in understanding the policies and procedures of videogame ratings.

What's with people? Why does this guy have to go sticking his nose up any parent's ass just because they feel that their children can play GTAIV or Saint's Row. That stuff pisses me off.

I let my 12 year old play all of those games. The shit in them is no worse than Law and Order SVU or CSI Miami, and most PG-13 movies squeeze in as much T&A as any video game I have played. Fuckin' stick to parking tickets, and quit interfering with people's rights.

lol! that was funny!

but to play devils advocate right quick, i understand why they feel they need to take these steps. children absorb so much information at an early age, if not monitored and taught properly they abuse what they know, it affects them. . . so where some parents, (not all cause there are those who are active in their childs life and are concerned about what they take in) don't monitor what they kids are watching, playing and reading, the government or people who work for the government who feel strongly about the affects it has on children try to fix the situation by making laws blah blah blah blah blah. now i strongly believe parents need to monitor they kids so im not wit no laws like that, the punishment for the parent will be a kid who wigs the hell out and opens up a banana clip at the local junior high school one day. . . and all kids don't respond the same way to what they take in, cause i know when i have a kid they not gonna play gta and then think that they can just walk down the street and knock somebody out. . . end of the day its the parents job

This is one of the stupidest things I have ever heard.

To give an argument to iamwatt, when kids are at the age where they absorb ALOT of information, they are also at the age where they want to play with their friends outside... I know when I was young I had all the gaming systems (and pretty much still do) NES, SNES, Sega, N64, Dreamcast, and the list goes on... I spent very little time playing video games because it was more fun to play with friends.

Also, I dont think alot of young kids have the dexterity to play games and enjoy them enough to desensitize them. Also, look at me I remember playing the very first GTA's on gameboy etc, and I dont run around and shoot people on the street, nor do I act more violent than people who never game.

What I would like is for a study to take place and show all the times people are exposed to violence daily... Where would the majority come? Media. When you turn on the news what do you see 9 times out of 10? A stabbing? A shooting? A robbery? I am willing to bet alot of parent that restrict their kids from gaming (at a young age) let them watch T.V... Think about all the violence on T.V. Even in pokemon, what happens to the bad guys? The good guys 'kill' him...

Govt should have 0 influence in child rearing... The only exception would be if someone was training their children to be like serial killers or something...

Just my opinion...

you're on point! but at the same time we're in a completely different generation and the ratio of kids going outside and playing in the park or where ever to them sitting on they ass in the house playing video games and watching tv and myspacing it and all that other digital media we have is really low. kids are even more fatter nowadays. every kid is not gonna play a violent game and walk out side and commit a murder. all expressions of aggressive behavior and abusive behavior start in seed form meaning that when "children wig out" it can be traced back to some form of influence, and thats not necessarily a video game, it could be them witnessing the pops slap they moms around or something they saw on tv like you said. so i can understand why someone (the government) would want to enforce some lame law to get parents to be a bit more responsible with their stewardship over their child but at the same time im not 100% wit it because parents need to do they job and watch the kids, simple as that. the fact that the government wants to do that isn't bad, it's the fact that once the get they way its seems as if they have to much control and then things get out of hand. . . there was a time when people believed it took a village to raise a child, now eybody be on some don't tell me how to raise my child stuff, and it be the same parents whos kids slaughtered a whole 3rd floor in they high school to turn around and say oh no not my baby, hes a good kid. . . lmao! im glad you go outside and play cause kids is lazy as hell nowadays and bad as hell.

once again i don't support the gov trying to tell you how to raise ya kids but at the same time aint nothing wrong with wise councel. . .

also when i do have kids im not gonna let them play games like gta and saints row because theres just some thing they shouldn't be subject to at a certain age, there truely is a time and a place for everything and no as parents you not gonna be around em 24/7 to monitor eything they do but when you are you do what you suppose to and eything will be ight. . . amen! lol!

Debate = Good :)

Yea, I do know kids are getting fatter all the time, there are so many shows with obese kids, and even on 'The Biggest Loser' they have younger and younger people all the time.

Looking back, I shouldn't have said 0 control in raising a child. I mean they should have some, but it would only be if the child or their upbringing was a danger to itself or others (or would be in the future).

Just a main thing I see wrong with all these study's is they blame video games. Alot of these studys make onto television, and then you see shows like "Dateline NBC" doing a special report on video game violence, or you see shows about some infamous killer or criminal or whatever, and they always say something about them playing video games as a child. Like I said previously, I think the media and society projects WAY more violence than you get from a video game.

I for the most part will allow my children to play GTA and saints row etc...

My philosophy for child raising is to have an open relationship. I know ALOT of people who have this with their parents and they dont want to do things that will mess it up because they will lose alot.

This is a great turning point in our society. This is the time when we as parents, children, people in general can prove to ourselves and our nations that we are not unconscious beings harboring a gelatinous mass for a brain, but that we are capable citizens of a sophisticated world that knows the difference between right and wrong and knows how to notice the signs in not just children but all people of change. Of change in a person that wants to harm their brothers and sisters in schools, in businesses, in the streets. We as humans are responsible for each other, to watch over each other, and to help each other through hard times, confusing times. I am a soldier of the Greatest Nation USA (to my UK brothers we are one in the same) and I have seen hardship and the trials and tribulations of a war torn nation that refused to help themselves until now. We can not let Senators and Legislators govern our rights as human beings but instead make sure they understand who they work for and who keeps them in office. I'm not talking about blowing up government buildings but instead as Edward Bulwer-Lytton once said, "The pen is mightier than the Sword". So if your governments are trying to control you and belittle your rights, then write to them. Let your voice be heard!!!

See the government is getting one step closer to running peoples lifes. UM...... I knew sooner or later it was going to come to this. Now what can we do. They just need to keep out of what the parents of the kid wants for their kids to play.
