i was given an Xbox 360 that is having DVD reading problems, and came across another DVD Drive do i have to spoof the old key into the new drive or will it just work ?

you will have to flash to your orig console dvd drive key
if it has the same kind of dvd drive
if it has a different dvd drive
then you will have to put your orig drive key in that firmware and spoof that firmware to report as your orig firmwre.
