I got a new Kreon drive off Ebay - the 162D. It was supposedly flashed with 1.0 and XBC seems to agree with that but the UNLOCK DRIVE option is grayed out. Schtrom tells me that it can only be used as a DVD-ROM drive and cant read 360 originals.
I downloaded the firmware from XBins and it tells me the 162D bin is not for my drive - but it is.
Any suggestions?

I don't know that much about the D version of these drives. This is the sata version right?? Are you able to choose between SPTI and ASPI mode? If you can, switch it to ASPI mode and see if you can get it to read. If it reports in XBC as a kreon drive, you should have to do anything to it.

Re: Weird Kreon prob...
Its an IDE drive that I have connected to the IDE port on my Via SATA card. Would that cause any problems? I dont have any IDE ports on my mobo.
Re: Weird Kreon prob...
It could. Did you try to see if you could switch between SPTI and ASPI? If you don't have any IDE ports, you may end up having to get an external USB case for it. Thats what I did, since my main PC doesn't have any IDE ports, it's all SATA...... Make sure the drive is jumpered properly too, should be set to master if there is nothing else on the IDE port of your card.

Thanks for the information.
I'm unable to switch between modes, just SPTI is available. It's set to master and there's nothing else IDE related connected. I'm pretty sure everything on my mobo is SATA only, so I'll probably have to go with an external USB solution.

Re: Weird Kreon prob...
check in the device manger that it is enabled
there have been some people that say it would not work for them unless it was set as a master.
ive not read about anyone using the oci card ide.
i dont see why it wont work.
i use the ide on my pci sata card with a ide to do my hotswap dumps.
make sure to post up how this goes.

In following the XBC tutorial, it goes directly to the larger partition but the unlock button is still greyed out. Interesting.
The Device Manager shows it as TSSTcorp DVD-ROM SH-D162D SCSI Cdrom Device.

i do it that way with my laptop all the time.
just put the drive in a enclosurer and hook it up
Re: Weird Kreon prob...
The IDE port on the raid controller may not support all the command sets needed to get it to rip. What makes me think this is the fact that you can't switch to ASPI. Any normal IDE controller should be able to support ASPI unless it only has a limited number of command sets. Which is what makes me think that an external USB enclosure will be you answer here.

I was thinking along the same lines.
