flashed a sm28 sort of :(
Hullo, this is an awesome site and very helpfull.
Now for the fun stuff. I was having problems flashing my drive every time I would turn it on while I was booted from the USB drive I would get the overflow error. I managed to read the firmware and thought I was really clever by restoring the hacked firmware back to the drive. All was well in the world for about 1 week then last nite I was happly playing Call of duty 4 and then I got a dirty disk error. When I got back to the dashboard I ejected the drive and put it back in then it was reading then it said open tray. So I powered off, same thing, unplugged it from the wall, same thing, even left it unplugged over nite same thing. Tried backed up games originals normal DVD's and even a Wii game. All the same it reads for a little bit then goes to open tray. Had a quick blast at re-flashing it this morning but it didn't seem to kick in when I powered the drive off, tho that might be because I didn't unplug my other sata drives.
Any ideas?
P.S I'm using a 360 blaster NE.

Re: flashed a sm28 sort of :(
If it was working, playing backups and originals, then you actually flashed it, no sort of here.
If everything was working and just all of a sudden quit, it sounds like your laser may have but the dust. Your best bet would be to replace the drive. You'll have to dump the firmware and put your old key in the new firmware though. http://www.etech4sale.com has them for a reasonable price. Just do a search for xbox 360 and look through the products and you'll find them. They only carry ms-25's but it won't matter since the hacked firmware is ms-28 anyway, just if it asks if you want to spoof to ms-25, choose no. They have refurbished ones for $45 and new ones for $60 plus shipping.

Re: flashed a sm28 sort of :(
Thanks for the quick responce, I've been looking on and off when works allows and found a few things that might fix it, replace the laser, replace the drive, adjust the pot on the laser or my hopefull fav an elastic band.
It seems that the laser can start to read the disk to early and start reading on the clear bit. So by stopping the laser goig so far into the middle it can fix it. Well thats the theory. I'm going to have a blast to night. Hopefully wont have to replave the drive only just got it to flash!
Thanks again Lee

Re: flashed a sm28 sort of :(
as far as i know the only time the rubber band trick works is when you are getting the "open tray" error
they have fixed this in the firmware for the most part.once again if it was playing good for a week.then something broke.drive, laser something.
i dont see the rubber band trick fixing it.
im with sadalius on this
new laser
or
new drive
sorry about that

Re: flashed a sm28 sort of :(
if the laser was going to go out it was going to happen flash or not.
Re: flashed a sm28 sort of :(
Had a quick play with the rubber band method worked a little can read normal dvd's. Do you think it might have been caused by using the x12 firmwear. Might try flashing it with the x8 one see if that helps. Gonna get an army of rubber bands

Re: flashed a sm28 sort of :(
the firmware is not the problem
you are going to be replacing this 360 dvd drive soon.

Re: flashed a sm28 sort of :(
Ok I've replaced the laser and now I get an "unreconised Disk" error on backups and original xbox 360 games. I'm going to check the pots to see if the laser is just a bit under powered. Or is it likely that I haven't installed it properly?

Re: flashed a sm28 sort of :(
It chugged at reading it for a while and then just came up with open tray. I'm going to try and re-seat everything this weekend when I've got a few mins. Managed to get online and get my free game tho

Re: flashed a sm28 sort of :(
Just done a search for replacing the xbox 360 laser and discovered that you have to remove a lump of solder off the new laser. I was completely unaware of this. There's something else for me to try over the weekend if i can find my soldering kit!

Re: flashed a sm28 sort of :(
Yup, thats put there as a means of protecting the laser from a static charge and possibly damaging the laser during shipping. So when your ready to install the laser, you need to remove that little blob of solder.

Lol should have looked into it a bit more before i stuck it in there. Maybe should put a tut up there for other thick people like me
or just a reminder some where.

Re: flashed a sm28 sort of :(
I think the reason we don't have a guide on that is because none of us have replaced the laser before. Most of us just go ahead and replace the drive in those situations, in my case, its because I hate soldering stuff and I had read about the solder blob before, so I figure knowing me, I would burn the flat ribbon cable thing on the laser and it wouldn't work anymore. But thats just me
