Hitachi Flashing Help

Hi All
Im very new here so please bare with me. I have today flashed my sons Samsung MS28 drive the TH-9.... model i think. My mate has asked me to do his xbox 360 which was flashed some time ago i think he said its on 1.2.
How do i know which hitachi drive it actually is ie 79, 78, etc etc and if its been flashed earlier and i dont have the key or serial can i still do it succesful.
I havent got a CK3 kit as i dont want to buy one until i get more requests so can i still do them with my sata card i used today.

You wont be able to tell what version unless he has the OFW, or by opening it up.
